10 Years of The Jeju Peace Forum: From Activism to Cynicism

    in History

The Jeju Peace Forum was founded in 2001 with the goal of contributing to world peace and international cooperation in the East Asian sphere through multilateral dialogue and community building.

The 2003 edition of the conference included President Roh Muu-hyun's official apology to Jeju Island for the 4.3 massacre and the 2007 Jeju Declaration envisioned a regional peacekeeping diplomatic role for South Korea based on the Helsinki Process.

In 2008, with the election of the hardline right-wing Lee Myung-bak government, the foreign affairs ministry changed the name of the conference to The Jeju Forum for Peace and Prosperity and shifted focus away from co-operative agreements, bringing in big name speakers on themes unrelated to the peace process.

A glance at the list of events, workshops and speakers from the 10th Forum held last May, full of washed-up politicians and discredited neoliberal economic themes, suggests a conference in search of an identity.

Darren Southcott, editor-in-chief of The Jeju Weekly magazine, joins The Korea File to discuss whether or not the Forum has stayed true to it’s roots as a regional peace initiative.

Mixing Art and Activism. What it is like to do both?

    in Art

    Chicago's Black Business Radio Network

(All Black! All News! All You!)

This segment is Art and Social Justice Issues, a combination some listeners might not be aware of. My goal is to connect you to social justice issues through art.

On today's show, Mixing Art and Activism. What it is like to do both?, we will talking with a long time North Lawndale resident who is exactly that, an artist and activist.

Paul Ramey, former resident of North Lawndale, tells what his current art show is about, what his most recent activism is- the Peace Walk he was on today.  We will ask Paul how he mixes art-making & activism. He will also introduce his idea for a plan he has to begin a non-profit organization to feed and clothe homeless individuals. Paul Ramey grew up in North Lawndale and is now an artist and activist. You can see art and activist in any of his works.

Thank you for listening to Art and Social Justice Issues. I'm Dianna Long and I am about connecting people to social justice issues through art.

If you would like to sponsor one or our upcoming shows, please contact our show's Executive Producer at cesarquiroz379@gmail.com.

The artists who took to the stage represented diverse backgrounds ethnically and professionally, showing how activist art can be woven into our society’s most important conversations through various channels. Dance, education, spoken word, theater, public political actions and painting were the avenues these artists have used to unite communities in hopes of a better future.

Art and Activism " TACTICAL  URBANISM"- projects that engage the public.

Tactical urbanism is an umbrella term used to describe a collection of low-cost, temporary changes to the built environment, usually in cities, intended to improve local neighbourhoods and city gathering places. Join us while YAYA talks about projects that she has been involved of the past decade.

Your Peace is not just for You!

    in Radio

Many ideas have been created when the author, inventor, or creator is at peace.  When the mind is stressful, one cannot think clearly or hear clearly, and the small still voice cannot be heard. Just think if George Washington Carver had not gotten up at 4am to take a walk of solitude, we would not have the great inventions from the peanut.  If Joel Olsteen did not spend quiet time with God, we would have books to encourage us to continue this walk.  Yes, we need our peace to maintain a productive life, however, the products of our peace is not just for us.  It is for our childen, generations to come, our friends, family, co-workers, and those who God puts in our path.  Our peace will help us encourage others to develop their gifts and talents.
