This week, we are going to discuss a very serious health topic on The Authentic Woman. Ovarian Cancer is difficult to detect and, therefore, has a high mortality rate because it is often not discovered until it has reached a late stage. 22,000 women receive this diagnosis every year – and 14,000 women die of it annually.
My guest this week is Esther Windmueller, an ovarian cancer survivor who founded the nonprofit organization Cancer Dancer. Esther's organization helps women who have been diagnosed with ovarian cancer understand the disease, learn all of their options and become aware of all of the newest treatments available - as well as joining these women together in a supportive community so they can connect with others who truly understand their journey.
We will discuss the warning signs of ovarian cancer so our listeners can be informed and recognize a potential problem as early as possible. Through awareness lives can be saved. “The most rewarding part of working with CancerDancer is the feedback from those who say we have really, really helped them through some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Hearing this keeps us going.” ~ Esther Windmueller
Hosted by women's rights leader, Shannon Fisher, The Authentic Woman shares Perspectives on the Female Experience in America by delving deeply into the worlds of writers, artists, celebrities and community leaders. Tuwina (“Wina”) Holt born on April 19, to Mary Ellen Holt in Inglewood California. Wina was always close to her mother, and drew inspiration from her example. Having a strong family foundation, and a mother who continually challenged her children to never become victims of circumstance, Wina Holt found the strength to give birth to her son at an early age. Never breaking stride, she continued her education into adulthood, where she was able to successfully earn licenses in Medical Assistance and Phlebotomy, later she went to college and earned a Liberal Arts and a Nursing degree. Soon after she was hired to work under Dr. Gordon as a Research Coordinator/Nurse at The Long Beach, CA VA Hospital. Her team at the time was one of the top vascular research teams in the nation, and conducted studies on medications that was pending FDA approval.
From there Ms. Holt accepted a position as Head Nurse at a Drug Rehabilitation Facility in South Central Los Angeles, working under Dr. Firepong and Dr. Joseph Edem. Around this time she became pregnant with her third child, and decided to open her own Day Care Center so that she could spend time with her children, following the incredible example set by her mother. 5 years into successful managing her day care business, Ms. Holt received troubling news that her mother was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer, and it was in the fourth stage. Not wasting a second, Ms. Holt rushed to her mother’s side. Upon her arrival her mother seemed confident that she would beat the illness. She had been in remission for 13 months, but then the disease resurfaced more aggressively.
For 2 1/2 years Ms. Holt stood by her mother’s side as she braved what seemed like impossible odds until the day she finally succumbed to the illness. Her mother’s passing left a deep imprint on the family, especially Ms. Holt.
“As you become a more pure person, the world does not get any better, the world does not treat you any better, it treats you much worse. And that worse, if you deal with it properly, if you deal with it graciously, they can not penetrate you. You will begin to penetrate them with good.” Roy Masters talks about the importance of suffering.
