    Ordinary is the New Extraordinary

    in Books

My guest for this Sunday's episode is none other than Reverend Byron Benton, pastor of Berean Baptist Church in Raleigh, NC. What makes him extraordinary as a pastor and as a person is his genuine spirit of service. As an associate pastor at Berean Baptist Church in Brooklyn, NY, he founded the Berean Community Drumline which encouraged positive holistic health in youth by providing physical activity thereby combating obesity, diseases, and encouraging an overall healthy lifestyle. Simultaneously, it encouraged self-discipline and community service. The work he did with the Berean Community Drumline not only gave an outlet for youth, but it was a saving grace for some of the children that were involved over the years. What a worthy person to close out our month-long celebration of extraordinary men.

Tonight's guest is none other than owner of After Hours Computer Services and ImagesbyDon, Donald Webster.  Donald, often called Don by his friends and family, is a resident of Raleigh where he shares his life with the love-of-his-life Irene and his two lovely daughters, Moriah and Doneisha.  His is definitely not the expected ending.  Not at all.  Don grew up without a father figure, struggled with alcohol and drugs, and after repeatin the 9th grade three times dropped out of school.  His is a compelling story from pain to purpose.

    Ordinary Is The New Extraordinary

    in Books

Born in Mebane NC as a product of rape, Mr. Marrius "Moe" Pettiford had a lot to overcome.  He didn't know who his father was and felt he wasn't loved by his mother who was deaf and legally blind.  He could have allowed bitterness to eat his soul but embraced the spirit of his grandmother.  As a result, he has achieved academic excellence and is a respected presence in both counseling and education.
Mr. Pettiford's story inspires youth that there is nothing they cannot achieve regardless of what they have experienced in life.  He is currently serving as Director of Student Support Services for the Alamance Burlington School System.  He is also the CEO of Theta Phi Psi Fraternity, Inc., an adolescent male mentoring program.  He is definitely deserving of a seat in our League of Extraordinary Men.

My first guest is no stranger and is the perfect person for my inaugural show.  He is none other than my son, Derrien J. Hinton. Now a Sales Analyst at Johnson & Johnson in Philadelphia, the road to success wasn't easy. Not by any means.  Despite appearing on the outside to have it all together, he was a troubled youth carrying around bottled anger.  Listen as he shares candidly about his road to transformation.
