    Plea for Onesimus (Philemon 1:10-17)

    in Christianity

    TEXTS

I appeal to you for my child Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my imprisonment, who formerly was useless to you, but now is useful both to you and to me.

I have sent him back to you in person, that is, sending my very heart, whom I wished to keep with me, so that on your behalf he might minister to me in my imprisonment for the gospel; but without your consent I did not want to do anything, so that your goodness would not be, in effect, by compulsion but of your own free will.

For perhaps he was for this reason separated from you for a while, that you would have him back forever, no longer as a slave, but more than a slave, a beloved brother, especially to me, but how much more to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord.

If then you regard me a partner, accept him as you would me.

    DICTIONARIES

Onesimus is useful, a slave who, after robbing his master Philemon at Colosse, fled to Rome, where he was converted by the apostle Paul, who sent him back to his master with the epistle which bears his name. In it he beseeches Philemon to receive his slave as a faithful and beloved brother.

Paul offers to pay to Philemon anything his slave had taken, and to bear the wrong he had done him.

He was accompanied on his return by Tychicus, the bearer of the Epistle to the Colossians. The story of this fugitive Colossian slave is a remarkable evidence of the freedom of access to the prisoner which was granted to all, and a beautiful illustration both of the character of Paul and the transfiguring power and righteous principles of the gospel.

Imputation is used to designate any action or word or thing as reckoned to a person. Thus in doctrinal language the sin of Adam is imputed to all his descendants, it is reckoned as theirs, and they are dealt with therefore as guilty; the righteousness of Christ is imputed to them that believe in him, or so attributed to them as to be considered their own; and...

Deepertruth Tuesday Features Saints Of The Week

    in Religion

From the Epistle of St. Ignatius to the Smyrnians.
"Now the more any one sees the bishop keeping silence, the more ought he to revere him. For we ought to receive every one whom the Master of the house sends to be over His household, as we would do Him that sent him. It is manifest, therefore, that we should look upon the bishop even as we would upon the Lord Himself. And indeed Onesimus himself greatly commends your good order in God, that ye all live according to the truth, and that no sect has any dwelling-place among you. Nor, indeed, do ye hearken to any one rather than to Jesus Christ speaking in truth". (St. Ignatius to the Smyrna)

From the Epistle of St. Ignatius of Antioch to the Magnesians
3:1 And you it beseemeth not to despise the youth of your bishop, but to award all reverence unto him, respecting the power of God the Father which is in him, even as I have known the sacred presbyters to do, not having regard to his apparently youthful position, but as wise men in God yielding unto him: yet not unto him but unto the Father of Jesus Christ, who is bishop of all.

6:1 Since, then, I have in the persons of those above mentioned beheld as it were your whole multitude in faith and have loved you, I exhort you to be careful to do all things in the unity of God, since the bishop sits in the place of God, and the presbyters in the place of the synod of the Apostles, and the deacons, who are most dear to me, have been entrusted with the ministry of Jesus Christ, who was with the Father before the world began, and was manifested in the end.

The AE System: Revealing beauty with Arlene Embola

    in Education

In this 4th Episode we will deal with topics of outward beauty. To hide or not to hide? Some will argue that the hair is to be covered and only revealed to the husband, was that a mere cultural standard given in the bible to settle a specific issue or was it a once and for all resolution? We will connect biblical beauty concepts and how they relate to our world today.

Bible Study of Philemon 8-18. Key Verse: Philemon 21 In this series we find that Paul reminded Philemon that he was standing up for Onesimus because of their relationship in Christ. Some of the objectives we hope to cover as we examine this series are: 1. That we will explore our feelings about standing up for someone who needs advocacy. 2. Attempt to explain why Paul pleaded for Onesimus. 3. To realize that it is important to stand up for someone who needs your help. 4. To identify ways that we stand up for someone bullied or discriminated against. 5. To list some Biblical strategies for confronting and solving problems of injustice. This series is an open discussion and we invite you to share your thoughts and comments with us as we endeavor to study the Word of God. We also thank you in advance for helping us by subscribing to this broadcast with a commitment of $1 per month. We also would appreciate it if you ask others to help as well.
