3 Simple Health Strategies For Seniors
How to make lifestyle choices that lead to health and wellness.

Families with aging loved ones can help guide decision making for happier, healthier family members. Here are three simple health strategies for seniors that will help to make a positive, long lasting difference.

Get to the Root of Restless Sleep
Sleep declines with age naturally, and by age 70, a typical night of rest is just over 6 hours. A trip to the doctor can often uncover the root of sleep issues, whether it’s chronic pain, improper medications or something more serious.

Boost Immunity With Smart Diet Choices
A robust immune system is vital for reducing the risk of getting sick and staying healthy year round. Great foods for supporting immunity are vegetables, fruits and whole grains.

Skilled In Home Nursing For Safety, Guidance and Care
Professional in home care offers a loved one the assistance they need to age at home independently. Help administering medicine, light housekeeping, even running errands helps seniors stay confident and independent.

Gerald's Story: Nursing home and drug abuse of an elderly man

    in Family

Patrice Gilgan joins us this evening to expose the abuse and drugging of her father at the hands of doctors and nursing home workers in two different facilities in Orange County, California.  The first instance of abuse both physical and with drugs occured at Irvine Cottage Board and Care where Gerald had been sent to recover from brain surgery.  Gerald was drugged within 24 hours of admittance to the home with massive doses of Haldol, Seroqel and overdosed on morphine.  There was no prescription for the morphine.  Cottage Board and Care is operated by St Joseph Hospice, a Catholic enterprise.

At a second facility, Villa Valencia Skilled Nursing, (a St Michael Hospice and another Catholic owned  enterprise), Gerald was given 7 different drugs.  None of these drugs were to be used on brain injured or individuals suffering from dementia.  When Gerald was finally freed from this facility and hospitalized again, it took more than two weeks for him to respond due to the massive drug overload in his system.

Videos of Gerald, and of some of the abuse he endured are available on the you tube channel;  Ireland Dallas

Gerald Gilgan was a retired New York City Fire Fighter.  This man did not deserve this callous treatment.  No one does.  Yet it happens to the elderly every day here in the US.

    Ebola and Nursing Students

    in Health

Nursing students must enter healthcare facilities to meet the clinical component of nursing education. With the recent diagnosis of clients with Ebola on US soil and the CDC's changing guidelines, nursing educators are engaged in conversations on how this affects students. What are the students saying? With all the information that has been reported and debated in the media, there is no doubt that students may have concerns on how this affect them. Does anyone expect that a nursing student would be asked to care for someone diagnosed with Ebola? Do we have to re-think our approach to education on infection control? in Books

Memphis, TN – Ministry means service. Whether it’s nursing or feeding the homeless, when you have the gift of serving others, you would do it for free.

Linda Kinnard is the founder of Beautiful Beginnings Life Ministries, a coaching ministry dedicated to serving individuals to reach a greater place in their life. Linda founded her Beautiful Beginnings following a 20-year career as a registered nurse.

“I’ve always been a coach, a leader, that’s been able to see the best in people,” says Linda. “Being a nurse, I have been shaped to understand love. Beautiful Beginning Life Ministries was borne out of a desire to expand. I bring energy, power, strength and I bring a genuine belief in the person.”

As a nurse, Linda vowed to never separate herself or treat someone differently based on their status, color, religion. She believes this philosophy comes from a higher place.

“I love that we have the ability to strive, to use the potential we have to stretch ourselves and become more in the midst of obstacles,” says Linda. “That’s the type of coach I am. It goes hand in hand with ministry because you are inspiring people to reach a place they’ve never been before.”

Linda is the author of Daily Love Letters From God: PS. He Loves You. Published in September. the book is a modern day epistle written to believers to help them grow and mature in the principles of a Godly lifestyle.

“I’m most proud of the way I treat others. I don’t separate my love toward anyone. And that’s why I wrote Daily Love Letters From God: P.S. He Loves You,” says Linda. “Every letter is constructed to help you understand God’s love.”

Increased Alcoholism Rates Post Gastric Bypass Surgery

    in Lifestyle

In 2012 a study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association that reports the percentage of patients abusing alcohol increased from 7.6% to 9.6% two years after gastric bypass surgery - potentially creating 2,000 alcoholics every year in the US.

There is more than one theory on why this occurs.  Some say it is addiction transfer: a patient switches an addiction to food to an addiction to alcohol.  More recent evidence suggests an anatomical explanation - metabolic and hormonal changes triggered by gastric bypass surgery that leave patients especially vulnerable to alcoholism.  Maybe it is both - or neither?  The truth is nobody is 100% sure of why alcoholism rates increase post surgery.

If you are struggling with alcoholism post-surgery, however, the reason why may not be as relevant as what to do about it.  There are unique challenges that face people whose alcoholism may be attributed to gastric bypass surgery, and on this episode of the Bubble Hour we will discuss this startling trend.  We will share more information about why experts feel this increased vulnerability to alcoholism occurs, and speak with special guest Jessica about her own experience with gastric bypass surgery, alcoholism and recovery.

We are also excited to welcome Diane Grimaldi, DNP, PMHCS, BC as a guest on the show and an expert on this issue.

Diane started her psychotherapy practice in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1984 after receiving her Masters Degree in Adult Mental Health Nursing from Boston College and becoming a board certified Clinical Specialist in Psychiatric Nursing.

In 2014 she received a Doctorate in Nursing Practice from the University of Massachusetts, Lowell.  For more information about Diane and her practice please visit www.grimaldicounseling.com.

Bonnie Kaye's Books of Excellence with author Bob Weintraub

    in Books

My guest tonight is author Bob Weintraub, who has been a life-long fan of the Boston Red Sox. He grew up in Dorchester, Massachusetts, just eight miles from the famous Fenway Park. Bob played baseball in college at Brandeis University, and following  college, he served two years in the Army where he was stationed in Germany. When his military career ended, he returned to Boston, enrolled at Boston University School of Law, and studied law for three years. After graduation, he went into the law field of labor relations. He practiced for six years in Washington, D.C.and in San Francisco before returning to Boston.

It wasn't until later in his life that Bob tried his hand at fiction writing. His first short story was about Irving, a man who had survived a pogrom in Russia years earlier, and had promised God at the time that he would devote his life to prayer and being a moral and ethical person if he wasn't killed in the attacks. Irving did survive and kept his promise. The problem begins, however, when he is admitted, reluctantly (at the urging of his four children) to a Massachusetts nursing home and feels that it's incumbent upon him to persuade the other residents of the Home to live their lives as he was living his. Irving is loved by most of his fellow residents, but even love can go so far.

His first story was accepted by a distinguished literary magazine in North Carolina called "The Sun," and this was the beginning of Bob's career as a writer.

Tonight we'll hear more about Bob, his writing, his books, his upcoming projects, his great love for the Boston Red Sox, and his great recognition of his work by some very famous people.
