On grief talk with Audrey, I bring you experts in the fields of death and dying, grief and loss, hope and healing and those who have themselves been on their own grief journey, to share their experiences and skills to help my listeners.
To the patients and families of Haven Hospice, Nancy Gershman is “the Memory Artist” creating their Preferred Story from interviews, personal photos and photo research. This culminates in a realistic (and sometimes surrealistic) digital photomontage. The process involves asking factual questions about when the subject was at “their most vibrant;” then picking up on subtle cues like a detective, leading to the memories she immortalizes. On hospice nightstands, these dignity portraits give 11th hour sustenance. Taken home by surviving relatives, they become a supportive presence in the wake of loss.
Published work on Gershman’s “Dreamscapes” has appeared in Annals of American Psychotherapy; Advance for Nurses; Journal of Palliative Care; and in therapist Courtney Armstrong’s “Transforming Traumatic Grief: Six Steps to Move from Grief To Peace.” Grief expert Robert Neimeyer PhD includes a chapter on prescriptive photomontage in his compendium, “Techniques in Grief Therapy: Creative Strategies for Counseling the Bereaved.”
Currently, a traveling exhibit of Gershman’s Dreamscapes is on view at The University of Chicago Medicine following extended runs at NYU Langone Medical Center and The University of Rochester Medical Center.
Gershman received her Bachelor of Arts in Design and Communications from Hampshire College.
Alex Gershman - Bass Guitar and Band Leader of Sasha’s Bloc
Alex was born in Moscow, Russia.
He has always heard music well and started playing on his own in high school in a small band. He then played throughout medical school in different jazz bands playing piano and bass, and acoustic guitars. He played in various venues in Russia with many accomplished jazz musicians and performed in jam sessions with major horn players and big bands in Moscow.
His most passion always remained in Jazz of 1920’s and 30s. In 2012 Alex assembled his first jazz band Sasha’s Bloc. The first record produce by Joe Diblasi in early 2012 was a collection of Jazz Standards influenced by gipsy jazz.
Sasha’s Bloc enjoyed the success in 60 live performances in the best Jazz clubs in LA.
In the end of 2012 Alex started his work on the original songs and completed the collection in January of 2013 leading to the recording of the first original CD Melancholy.
Bassist Alexander Gershman, founder of the jazz collective Sasha's Bloc, chats with Big Blend Radio hosts Nancy J. Reid & Lisa D. Smith about the jazz industry and the release of their second album, Heart On Fire. Sasha’s Bloc aims to solidify their growing presence on the U.S. music scene with this original album that hearkens back to the Big Jazz Band sound of the 1920’s, 30’s and 40’s, and to a performance style that evokes such seminal acts as Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, Count Basie, Scott Joplin, Ella Fitzgerald and more.
An intriguing ensemble founded in 2012, Sasha’s Bloc is an amalgam of varied artists, nationalities and experiences, all fueled by bassist and songwriter Alex Gershman to deliver a sound that is consistently big, boisterous, full of spirit and rich in everything that makes jazz linger as an American phenomenon. On Heart On Fire, Gershman is honored to have Grammy-nominated vocalist Jane Monheit perform on multiple tracks.
This interview originally aired on Big Blend Radio on June 5, 2015, a show that broadcastes live from the historic Conorado Motor Hotel in Yuma, Arizona.
53 is the new 20 Nancy feels as if she's at the cusp of her life rather than dragging toward the end. At the age of 49, she believed suicide was her only choice. Major depression turned into a suicide attempt, yet four years later she's not the same woman.
Therapy unveiled the world of emotions, taught it is ok to pursue self-care, and expressed one's personal value at any age. God used this time to retrain me and to adjust her worldview.
Nancy's purpose is to tell people they are valuable and life will be worth it again one day, in hopes they will hang on to her story even when they have no faith in their own. In hopes they will hang on to my story even when they have no faith in their own.

in Self Help
As a Speaker, Author and Life Sensei for women, Nancy Mueller’s mission is to encourage women to improve their health, value their “self” and increase their wealth. The title, “Sensei” comes from her days as a student, competitor and teacher of the Martial Arts and is roughly translated to “teacher.”
Nancy teaches techniques and philosophies that will move you from a negative lifestyle to a positive lifestyle. Everyone has a story. Some stories enrich their lives and some stories are full of limiting beliefs that hold them back from reaching their true potential.
Nancy says, more often than not, the only thing holding us back from finding love are the stories we tell ourselves about why we CAN’T do something instead of concentrating on why we CAN do something. When we tell ourselves that we will never make enough money, we will never be healthy, we don’t fit in, we will never be good enough, or we will never love; these stories and others like it, hold us back from our true potential.

On this episode I'll be discussing society’s obsession with body image and body shaming. We see it in the media on awards shows or on shows like the fashion police. We may overhear someone on the street make comments about what the next woman may or may not be wearing. We see it in the comments section of social media websites like Facebook and Instagram. We see it everywhere. We have become a society that has become comfortable critiquing and criticizing other women. Whether one is curvy or slim, fashionista or not, it seems like somebody always has something to say.
