An evening with D.J. Battiest: candidate for Chief of the Choctaw Nation

    in Culture

With less than 30 days remaining before votes are cast for the office of Chief and the council seats of District 11 and 2. This election is being closely watched by many Choctaws since the names of other candidates were revealed in a special insert of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma headquarters official paper. Through social media, revelations from the former Senior Executive Director trial for corruption and bribery, disturbing details emerged and Chahta citizens began demanding a reform in their election process, transparency and accountability, along with campaign finance reform and changes to their constitution to assure checks and balances. When Choctaws asked for a public forum with the Chief, he refused saying he would only meet one on one. The Choctaw Nation claims to have over 200,000 citizens, thereby making close door meetings privately unweildly and impractical.
Through this discontent and distrust of the election system, two persons stood to run for the office of Chief. The incumbent Chief, Gary Batton quickly moved to disqualify both candidates, Sherman "Bo" Miller and Deborah "D.J." Battiest Tomasi, including another candidate for District-2 council, Alicia Seylor Nevaquaya. Miller and Nevaquaya were disqualified by Choctaw Nation attorney and the election board, both parties are appealing the decision.
For many Chahta's, all eyes and ears are on D.J., with hopes that she will bring openess and fairness within their Nation. Eaglemanz: Chahta Nation invites everyone to tune in Friday evening 7:30 PM (Central) and hear from D.J. If you are in the Broken Bow, OK area, come and meet her at the District - 2 Candidates Forum at McGee Chapel. Potluck starts at 4PM. and forum begins at 5 PM.
In the remaining month, we would welcome all candidates for office within the Choctaw Nation to come on and discuss their views. Contact the host through this site for details

DAN ARELLANO & CHIEF RUFUS DAVIS on the "Texas Rising" mini series"

    in Business

Statement of Dan Arellano, "On Saturday June 13, 2015 at the Mexican-American Cultural Center in Austin we met with scholars to discuss the mini series “Texas Rising,”  It is my own opinion that the series reeked of Anglo Superiority, and American exceptionalism and that’s after forcing myself to view the episodes, but truthfully I refuse to see the remainder, I have had enough. When you have people like Ann Coulter demonizing an entire nation you have to wonder what her  and the History Channels motives are or is all this nothing but Tea Party politics; didn’t our governor just allocate 800 million for border security? Also the History Channel is no more about history than Fox News is about the news."

Dan Arellano has been an activist for almost 40 years. He was a member of the Austin Optimist Club. He is a member of the Tejanos in Action and a past commander of this Veterans Organization. He is also a professional actor appearing in Machete Kills along side Cuba Gooding Jr in a speaking role. He is also the Co-Host of the Eddie Arevalo Spotlite Show. He is currently lecturing at the Bob Bullock Texas History Museum in Austin.

He has been doing the reenactment of the Battle of Medina in Losoya Texas.

    Dan Arellano Author/Historian
President Battle of Medina Historical Society

CHIEF RUFUS DAVIS discussed the recent walk out from the set of the Adam Sandler movie by Native American actors. The actors refused to participate realizing their ancestors were being portrayed as ignorant savages. We discussed how proud we all were at the heroic gesture from these actors. He also reminded us that Mexicans are also indigenous and he encouraged us to be proud of our roots. We also discussed our own Tejano re-enactors and how they continue to participate not realizing they are helping to perpetuate a myth, especially the myth of the Alamo.
