Women’s Alliance for Leadership (WAL) is a non-profit dedicated to the enrichment of LGBTQ women through professional & personal development. It was established in Dallas-Fort Worth in August 2010, recently expanded to Austin. Striving to become an integral part of the lives of our members WAL hosts and participates in major LGBTQ and women’s events, holds a dynamic range of dev workshops, and cultivates a mentoring program. Our leaders are committed to growing a strong organization that will improve the lives of our members, so that we may have a profound and lasting impact in these communities. As WAL continues to expand, the mission remains steadfast: to positively influence and empower women of the LGBTQ community & their allies, through education, career development, leadership skills, and networking opportunities in a professional environment. Mia M. Dia is the president and founder of WAL. Her dedication to community service began with her volunteer work, then the founding of WAL in 2010, and the establishment of the Austin branch this year. Her leadership has been instrumental and continues to inspire community participation and action. She is one of many in WAL dedicated to enhancing lives of LGBTQ women. Mia was 16 years old when she moved to Arlington with her family from Jordan, with her first Job was at Mcdonald's saving for classes at Tarrant county college. Her professional career started at the Univ of Texas at Arlington, where she earned a B.S. in civil engineering in 2007 and a membership in chi epsilon honors society. Mia’s expertise in engineering & water management projects led her to become a water/wastewater project manager today. Since arriving in Austin, she has dedicated herself to her new community through her expansion of WAL.

Kori welcomes the founders of Multicultural Children's Book Day to the program. Join us in a discussion about diversity in children's book publishing, what's gone wrong, what's going right, and where it's headed.
Despite census data that shows 37% of the US population consists of people of color, only 10% of children’s books published have diversity content. Using the Multicultural Children’s Book Day, Mia and Valarie are on a mission to change all of that. Their mission is to not only raise awareness for the kid’s books that celebrate diversity, but to get more of these types of books into classrooms and libraries. Another goal of this exciting event is to create a compilation of books and favorite reads that will provide not only a new reading list for the winter, but also a way to expose brilliant books to families, teachers, and libraries.
