Joy Keys chats with Musician Meshell Ndegeocello

    in Music

Meshell Ndegeocello was born Michelle Johnson in Berlin, Germany and raised in Washington DC.By the early 90's, she had landed in New York armed with a demo recorded in her bedroom, joined the Black Rock Coalition, and was soon signed to Madonna's label. Her records, 8 to date, have offered lyrical ruminations on race, love, sex, betrayal, God, and power, and she has simultaneously embraced and challenged listeners with her refusal to be pigeon-holed musically or personally. Genre defiant, Meshell has been celebrated for choosing the road less traveled - a winding adventure through her own musical ambitions rather than the industry formulas. Along the way, she has earned diehard fans, critical acclaim, the unfailing respect of fellow players, songwriters and composers, and 10 Grammy award nominations. http://www.meshell.com
Devil’s Halo, Meshell's 8th album and her first for Mercer Street, harkens back to the way records used to be made: no click track or electronic synthetics, with a focus on musicianship and live band energy. Meshell feels that Devil’s Halo represents a return to a place that she truly appreciates, music that is created and performed by people's hands. Produced by Meshell and guitarist Chris Bruce, and influenced by a wide breadth of sounds from The Human League to Wu Tang to Yes, Devil’s Halo displays Meshell's vocals and diversity throughout.

LOTL The Comfort Zone Presents Miguel Migs. New Album ' Dim Division '

    in Music

    ALBUM INFO
Miguel Migs is one of the most respected DJs, producers and label owners in house music; an artist whose influence on the current musical landscape cannot be overlooked. Migs personifies the soul-driven vibe of both the Naked Music and Salted Music Label projects in which he has been involved and, hailing from San Francisco himself, has been influential in cultivating and pioneering the famed ‘West Coast scene’.

Combining the best of the electronic music world with live instrumentation, he has carved out a deep, soulful niche, which carries with him the undying respect of his peers.

Rather than simply packing it full of club-ready tracks, with Dim Division Migs has created an album more focused on the listening experience. Throughout his multi-faceted career, Migs has always created a wide variety of music. Dim Division focuses on the songs, with intimate songwriting and vibrant yet subtle production taking precedent over peak-time dancefloor appeal.

Dim Division is a collection of house and downtempo gems that exemplify the very best aspects of Migs’ production aesthetic: fresh, buoyant and deeply soulful music that lifts the spirit, from the languorous chords of opener ‘I Can Feel It’, through the neon-flecked bounce of ‘Just Fade Away’ to the infectious groove of ‘Heartbeat’.
On Dim Division, Migs has also collaborated with an impressive international selection of artists including the multifaceted Meshell Ndegeocello, UK soul singer Omar, long-time collaborator Lisa Shaw, Andy Allo (who toured with Prince on guitar/vocals) and many more all making remarkable additions to the album.

    Turn It UP! w/ GODISHEUS

    in Radio

GODISHEUS is a powerhouse Funk Rock band wildly popular in the D.C. indie music scene. Formed by veteran D.C. hip-hop icon Head-Roc and an all-star lineup of some of the heaviest hitters on the go-go scene— Dwayne ‘Super Bad III’ Lee on guitar (Fayces U Know, Heaven Sent, MVP, Familiar Faces, 3LG), Byron “BJ” Jackson (Rare Essence, MeShell Ndegeocello), and Kenny “Kwick” Gross on drums (Chuck Brown, Lissen Band, Marcus Johnson Project), GODISHEUS is hard at work to define a new live sound rooted in the Funk and Rock.

Head-Roc, who has taken on the stage name Om V for this project, is no stranger to working with a live band. During the mid ’90s, he and Super Bad III (lead guitar) were part of Three Levels of Genius (3LG), a live hip-hop band that proved influential in the region. Om V is quick to point out that GODISHEUS is not

a typical hip-hop band, but rather “the 21st century return of substantive Funk music for the people.”

As we all know, Funk beget Go-Go and Hip-Hop in ways dear to the District. Don’t get it twisted: GODISHEUS is no cover band doing their best Parliament rendition; they are a rare and raw D.C. Funk Rock sound with a message of empowerment for the people delivered by one of D.C.’s MC champions. Over tight arrangements that are equal parts funk, rock and soul, Om V brings the lyrical heat, speaking truth to power with every line, something that has earned him the respect of hip-hop heads, punk rockers, indie rockers, and progressive audiences all over. Powered by Kwick’s impeccable drumming, Super Bad III’s six-string magic, and the low end work of BJ on bass, the GODISHEUS International Funk Train is set to dazzle audiences worldwide!

INDIE REVIEW RADIO/ JOHNNY POPCORN / INDIE ARTIST

    in Entertainment

In 2001, Johnny Popcorn was at its early stages, and for the members it was a place to be creative. Considered as a project outside of the regular music careers, Johnny Popcorn would be the outlet when things got too stressful. Fittingly enough, recording Johnny Popcorn jams seemed to hit the spot. Fast forward to 2011 when Johnny Popcorn offered a unique musical formula—a concoction of highly fueled croons layered with its own views on topics ranging from teenage growing pains, self-gratification, weed, humdrum suburbia, and family values. Initially consisting of two members, Hezekiah and Tone Whitfield, the duo's inspiration and experience is the masterpiece that cements Johnny Popcorn. Vocalist and songwriter, Hezekiah, is no stranger to the music industry with 3 full-length solo albums as a hip-hop artist. Feeling like he was neglecting his Southern Funk/Rock upbringing passed down from his parents from Kentucky and North Carolina, he felt inspired for something new and exciting to develop—ultimately settling in on a new found passion. Bass guitarist and all-around producer, Tone Whitfield a.k.a. Grumpy Smurf, has produced numerous songs for Bilal, Meshell Ndegeocello, Zap Mama, and others. Contrast to Hezekiah’s hip-hop background, Grumpy Smurf has always been a rock purist with an open mind. Today, JOHNNY POPCORN is a crow on a mission. An alter ego that was inspired by Hez and Tone, who would jokingly put down fake names on open mic lists. When the host called out JOHNNY POPCORN, the crowd would chuckle in amusement. “I think we have a name for a band,” says Tone Whitfield. If it’s riff-heavy, rolls off the tongue and is more filling, then it’s Johnny Popcorn.

Hybrid Jazz From Trish Hennessey - with Jim Beard!

    in Music

Seriously, yours truly was going to lay back and enjoy the opportunity for a day off from the show on 10/17 - the day after my birthday.  BUT the opportunity arose for an interview with the phenomenally respected Jim Beard - so I gave up my free day!
Philly born and classically trained, Jim is an internationally known "musician's musician" who showed promise VERY early as a multi-instrumentalist with a primary focus on keyboard.  As a teenager, he studied with the great arranger, Don Sebesky. And developed a love for arranging as well - along with composition and production skills.
Moving to New York in 1985, Jim rapidly advanced his career by working with a myriad of top shelf artists that were entranced with his sophistication and innate knowledge of their artistry.  We're talking about Dizzy Gillespie, Wayne Shorter and the Brecker Brothers now!  AND John McLaughlin, Dianne Reeves, Meshell Ndegeochello and a list of other in-your-face names that you've known for YEARS.
Jim also has countless compositions that have been heard in major films, TV and on radio.  He has been a respected instructor as well - and his love of multiple genres (having been inspired by Classical, Rock, Pop, R & B and Jazz) has - in turn - inspired hundreds of students.
Five highly touted solo projects - with a debut in 1990 - and now a sixth: "Show of Hands."  Jim just wrapped up a tour with Steely Dan and he's relaxing (somewhat!) at home - and will join us for as much time as he can give on 10/17/2013.  What an honor!  It's my pleasure to give such brilliance - Grammy Award-winning, I might add - strong focus during a special week :)
The show starts at ONE p.m. Eastern time.  Jim drops by at two!

Joy Keys chats with Singer Cody ChestnuTT

    in Music

Universally hailed as a thrilling new figure in music for his edgy, lo-fi debut, The Headphone Masterpiece, back in 2002,Cody ChesnuTT is a soul troubadour whose frank, socially conscious ruminations on life continue to challenge popular notions of what modern soul music can look and sound like. The Atlanta native has always stood his own creative ground, ever since he first holed himself up in his bedroom to record The Headphone Masterpiece.
Cody sang "To Be Young, Gifted and Black" on Meshell Ndegeocello's album Pour Une Âme Souveraine (or "For a Sovereign Soul"). Check it out on Sound Cloud:
    http://www.soundcloud.com/okayplayer/meshell-ndegeocello-to-be
Landing On A Hundred, Cody’s second full-length LP, marks his return to the music game after a period of family-man retreat and reflection that did a world of good for him after his meteoric rise to near fame. The title is a reference to the slang saying, “Keeping It One Hundred,” or telling the whole truth, and for lovers of true blue Southern soul this new album is a must-have.  http://www.cchesnutt.com
