Financial Grace Radio: Cultivating God’s Money Trees in Your Life Today

    in Women

    Today's Show:  Your Golden Goose

There is a popular fable about a goose that laid golden eggs.  There are several morals and popular sayings that have come out of the story, one of which is, “ Don’t kill the golden goose”.  Jeremiah 17:8 says, “He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.”

The lessons we can learn from the fable and the verse in Jeremiah have many applications in finance today.  Earning your income is one, selling your assets is another.  Today on Financial Grace Radio, we’re going to explore what are your ‘golden geese’ today and how to decide when to sell them and when to keep them.

    Inspiration of the Day

“Live today the way you want to be remembered tomorrow.”

    - Dillon Burroughs

    So Now What?

There’s an old saying: “If you want to know how to live your life, think about what you’d like people to say about you after you die and live backwards.”

Let me give you an example.

Alfred Nobel invented dynamite in 1867. He did so because he thought his invention would actually end warfare. He wrote that, “The day when two army corps can annihilate each other in one second, all civilized nations, it is to be hoped, will recoil from war and discharge their troops.”

His ideas were not unlike the massive military build up during the Cold War between The Soviet Union and the United States from the 1960’s to 1980’s – preemptive deterrence.

However, life has a way of throwing curve balls, and in 1888, when Alfred’s brother Ludvig died, a French newspaper mistakenly ran an obituary for Alfred, in which they called him “the merchant of death.”

Alfred was so horrified by that label that he decided to change his destiny. After he died, he left 94% of his wealth to form a foundation. This foundation established 5 honors with annual awards presented to people who have produced the greatest benefit for humanity...

    Inspiration of the Day

“Sell your cleverness and buy bewilderment.”

    Rumi
    13th Century Sufi Poet

    So Now What?

You may have read Douglas Adams’ Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy books. In the first novel, a group of hyper-intelligent pan-dimensional beings demand to learn the Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, The Universe, and Everything from the supercomputer, Deep Thought, specially built for this purpose. It takes Deep Thought 7½ million years to compute and check the answer, which turns out to be 42.

Deep Thought points out that the answer seems meaningless because the beings who instructed it never actually knew what the Question was.

Maybe before we look for any more answers we should make sure we really know what the questions are.

    Who Owes You?

    Inspiration of the Day

“A great burden was lifted from my shoulders the day I realized that no one owes me anything.”

    Harry Browne
    Author, Investment Analyst and Politician

    So Now What?

Maybe you feel ripped off by life because of a crappy childhood, lost marriage, bad job, lack of financial success. Your parents owe you, your spouse owes you, your kids owe you, your boss owes you, your customers owe you.

Believing somebody owes you something can breed resentment.

I looked “resentment” up in the dictionary.

Some synonyms for “resentment” include: hate, anger, bitterness, annoyance, grudge, fury, rage, irritation, wrath, and hurt.

Some antonyms for “resentment” include: happiness, joy, calm, affection, comfort, cheer, kindness and love.

    It’s your choice.

And now maybe Harry Browne’s quote makes even more sense: “A great burden was lifted from my shoulders the day I realized that no one owes me anything.”

    “We cannot change our past.
We can not change the fact that people act in a certain way.
We can not change the inevitable.

“The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude.

“I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it.
And so it is with you… we are in charge of our attitudes.”

    Charles Swindoll
    Author, educator, and radio preacher

“A man will be imprisoned in a room with a door that is unlocked and opens inwards as long as it does not occur to him to pull rather than push. ”

    Ludwig Wittgenstein
Philosopher who taught at the University of Cambridge

    So Now What?

I like these two quotes together because they ask a simple question:

What if it really was that easy?

What if you really could turn your life around just by pulling rather than pushing? OK, that’s a rather weak way of describing how to fix life’s problems but what if instead of resisting whatever it is that’s going on you use the most powerful tool in your toolbox to deal with it...
