I have done several shows about Lymphedema and the grassroots efforts to get the Lymphedema Treatment Bill passed. This one came from an original airing of 5/1/10.
"Back in March, we had a show introducting you to the HR 4662 which involves the improvement for health care costs for lymphedema patients. Please join us again today to learn what has been done, what you can do, and what this means to you if you (or someone you know) has lymphedema. We need to get this bill passed in this year's legislation session. We will have Jennifer and Jenny on our show, as well as some other pertinent people that can add more to enlighten about this very important bill." http://www.blogtalkradio.com/oralhistory/2010/05/01/beyond-words-live--understanding-hb-4662
BEYOND WORDS LIVE is designed as a platform for survivors to tell their own stories in their own words.

Dr. Stanley Rockson (of Stanford University Medical School) states that: "Lymphedema is a common disease. Approximately 10 million Americans, for example, have lymphedema secondary to breast and pelvic cancer therapy, recurrent infections, injuries, or vascular surgery." (2010) Imagine, if there were approximately 10 million Americans then, how many more there are now in 2014 (knowing that there is no cure for it as it stands to date)?
For many years, I had key advocates come on my show to discuss various cases and, especially, the aspects of advocating in the legislature. On January 27th, Heather Ferguson (one of those advocates) will come on my show to discuss some updates on those legislative issues being presented.
Today, though, I will open the mic up to patients, advocates, and caregivers especially to tell their stories on how Lymphedema has affected them. We will then share this with legislators to personally hear the many stories typical to illustrate the pervasiveness of this condition.
Please mark your calendars and join us on March 6th at 10a CST to share and/or be better informed about these issues.
Dr Synonymous (Pat Jonas, MD) reviews the recent OAFP Annual Meeting, then comments on Direct Primary Care issues of interest to Family Physicians. He gets philosophical (no surprise) about the role of the Family Physician including some comments about the "Myth and the Magic of Family Medicine"
Check it out. And Twitter photos from the OAFP meeting at #Ohioafp. You'll see Dr Jonas (48th President of OAFP) in more than ten selfies with other leaders.
Tiffany Howe was born with Primary Congenital Lymphedema (Milroy’s Disease). After 27 years of struggling with this ailment, she was given a choice of losing her left leg or undergoing the Charles Debulking procedure. The choice was difficult and very challenging to make. She chose the Charles Debulking procedure and could not have guessed the life-changing experiences which would result. Full recovery took a year and included her learning to walk again. For the next five years, Tiffany used her training as a Registered Nurse to research and study any available information about Lymphedema. Research ultimately led me to the conclusion that Lymphedema patients are in need of support for this currently incurable disease. Support includes education and advocacy. I represent Virginia as part of the Lymphedema Advocacy Group, which is a patient-centered group, raising awareness. Our mission is to get passage in Congress for the Lymphedema Treatment Act.
Come hear her story and more!

Turlock, CA – Every cell in the heart has the ability to initiate an impulse. Donna Hendershot began her life living in a railroad box car with no running water or plumbing. Growing up, she always dreamed of one day working in the medical field, but her family couldn’t afford to send her to nursing school.
At the age of 28, Donna Hendershot defied the odds, finally attending to be a medical assistant. With her foot in the door, finally, Donna resolved to learn every aspect of cardiology.
That was over 36 years ago. Today, Donna is a retired cardiovascular sonographer. Over the course of her career, supervised all diagnostic testing at San Leandro Hospital and served as an educator, teaching hundreds of nursing students, as well as volunteers, senior citizens and nonmedical professionals, on all aspects related to the anatomy and function of the heart.
“I don’t like to use the word retired,” says Donna. “I’m not done working. I have so much knowledge to share.”
The heart works both electrically and mechanically. If an EKG is abnormal they will supplement that test with a sonogram. In cardiac sonography, a transducer penetrates sound into the chest, allowing physicians to look at the individual chambers of the heart and determine how well each is functioning. When you correlate a sonogram with a patient’s EKG, you have a really clear picture of what’s going on with someone’s heart.
“It was my job to help the doctor help the patient,” says Donna. “The sonogram allows patients to know what’s going on in their bodies before it’s too late, so I loved working with patients and encouraging patients when they were going to have surgery.”

Using a new microphone, Dr Jonas, your host, discusses Back to School issues seen by Family Physicians, in Ohio. After reflecting on August and September in the office, he gets philosophical (no surprise) about the role of the Family Physician including some comments about clinical decision through the patient-physician "human" relationship.
He floats through a few Tweets on Twitter before reading part of the AFP Community blog by Jennifer Middleton, MD about the role of the Family Physician.
At the end he plays the banjo a few notes and sings parts of a couple songs he wrote as a way of testing the new microphone.

How common is physician burnout? (It averages about 1 in 3 physician, year after year, regardless of country)
What’s going on the the US that compounds physician burnout? (Take a wild guess)
What are the symptoms? How do burned out physicians behave? (Ask an empowered patient)
Is it identifiable? Treatable? Preventable? (Yes, Yes, & Yes!)
Are there tactics that physicians can employ to feel better again? (Dike has identified at least 117)
What is The Happy MD? How can it help? (Ah, this is what we talk about – be sure to listen to the interview)

Multispecialty group practices cultivate an environment of high-quality care where physicians can consult with each other on rare cases or multiple medical problems. With enhanced communication between doctors this type of practice model is beneficial in more ways than just patient care and allows the practice to flourish.
Today we are talking with Dr. Mark Sivers about the benefits of group practice settings and why they are better for your health. Dr. Sivers is a general dentist who also serves as a scientific-dental consultant to legal firms and investment institutions. Dr. Sivers is a graduate of the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and has been included in Guide to America’s Top Dentists since 2012.
