A NORTH FLORIDA WRITER WARNING: BEWARE OF THE REPUBLICAN ESTABLISHMENT!

    in Lifestyle

TED CRUZ WINS IN WISCONSIN AND SETS DONALD TRUMP BACK A BIT, YET THE RACE FOR THE REPUBLICAN NOMINATION IS FAR FROM OVER. REGARDLESS OF YOUR FAVORITE, THE SENATOR IS TO BE CONGRATULATED FOR A WELL ORGANIZED PRIMARY WIN. AND NOW WHAT SHOULD CONCERN US MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE IS WHAT THE REPUBLICAN ESTABLISMENT IS UP TO. SINCE WE KNOW THAT THEY DON'T LIKE EITHER OF THE TWO LEADERS IN THE RACE, ARE THEY SETTING UP A DOUBLE CROSS, ARE THEY COOPTING A CANDIDATE, OR IS THEIR EVEN SOMETHING MORE DEVIOUS COMING UP?  AFTER ALL, NEVER FORGET WHAT THEY DID TO YOUNG CHRIS MCDANIEL IN MISSISSIPPI IN 2014 AND THAT WAS JUST A SENATE SEAT.  A BRIGHT YOUNG MAN WAS SMEARED BY THE PARTY THAT HE HAD SUPPORTED SINCE HE WAS 13 YEARS OLD BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T WANT A CONSERVATIVE TO REPLACE AGING THAD COCHRAN.  SO NEVER DOUBT WHAT THEY'LL TRY TO DO IN A PRESIDENTIAL RACE WHEN THE TWO LEADERS DO NOT FIT THEIR MOLD OF "GOING ALONG TO GET ALONG".  REGULAR GUEST MARK COLLIER WILL JOIN NORTH FLORIDA WRITER LIVE THURSDAY AFTERNOON AS WE DISCUSS THE UNFOLDING DRAMA  OF THE ELECTION CYCLE AND WHAT IT MEANS TO CONSERVATISM. WE HOPE YOU'LL JOIN US FOR A TIMELY DISCUSSION.

North Florida Writer Live: I-75 Relief Task Force Update: Meeting #4

    in Lifestyle

Friday afternoon at 3 pm North Florida Writer Live will present an overview of the happenings at the I-75 Task Force meeting on April 6th at the Villages, a meeting generated by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) at the request of Governor Scott and his Secretary of Transportation.  Yours truly was one of the group of private citizens from the six county study area who spent the day observing and listening to the Task Force discussion of interstate roadway needs before offering public comments on the matter. There are a number of issues which are troubling in the overall process and this session was by far the most active session since the process started last December. For the first time since the sessions started, a number of the state-appointed panel members had serious questions and reservations about the process as it unfolded.  The panel even put into the mix for consideration the option of no new roadway at all, just modification of existing roads. We will talk about this matter, offer comments on a few of the key moments during the day and take a few calls if time allows and we hope that local area listeners will pass the information on to others in the way of possible road changes. It's your state and your land, folks, so get involved, be informed and speak up. We hope you will tune in for the show.

    NOSTALGIA: "WELCOME TO GERMANY, LIEUTENANT"

    in Lifestyle

ALL OF US HAVE FOND MEMORIES OF OUR OWN "PERSONAL GOOD OLD DAYS".  THEY CAN BE ABOUT OUR CHILDHOOD, SCHOOL DAYS, AN EARLY LOVE, PRACTICALLY ANYTHING. BUT FOR THOSE OF US WHO HAVE SERVED IN THE MILITARY, SOME OF OUR EXPERIENCES FROM THE SERVICE LEAVE THE MOST LASTING MEMORIES. MAYBE IT COMES FROM THE CAMARADERIE, DIRECTIONS THAT WE THOUGHT WERE RIDICULOUS OR BECAUSE OF THE UNIQUENESS OF THE CIRCUMSTANCES FACED BUT WHATEVER THE REASON, THEY ARE MEMORABLE. AND WHILE MANY OF THEM WERE OF MAJOR CONCERN AT THE TIME, AS WE GET OLDER THEY OFTEN BRING LAUGHTER. FORTUNATELY, OVER TIME WE FORGET MANY OF THE BAD THINGS WE FACE.

ON TONIGHT'S SHOW I WILL SHARE ONE OF MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCES WHICH WAS OF MAJOR CONCERN AT THE TIME, YET IT TURNED OUT WELL AND IT EVEN WORKED TO MY ADVANTAGE OVER THE LONG RUN.  THAT'S OFTEN THE WAY LIFE TURNED OUT IN THE ARMY, AND OFTEN SOME OF THE THINGS THAT YOU COULDN'T WAIT TO BE RID OF WERE ACTUALLY MISSED LATER IN LIFE.  IF NOTHING MORE IT TAUGHT ALL OF US THAT RULES DO MATTER AND IF YOU DON'T FOLLOW THEM, YOU PAY THE PRICE.

THE SHOW WILL AIR LIVE AT 730 PM ON NORTH FLORIDA WRITER LIVE AND THEN BE ON DEMAND. AND, DON'T FORGET, I'M LOOKING FOR YOUR GOOD NOSTALGIC STORIES ABOUT YOUR AMERICANA "GOOD OLD DAYS". DROP ME A LINE AND LET ME KNOW IF YOU MIGHT BE INTERESTED FOR A FUTURE SHOW. IT WOULD BE FUN, I'M SURE.   HOPE YOU JOIN US FOR OUR LITTLE TRIP DOWN NOSTALGIA LANE TONIGHT OR BY LISTENING LATER AT YOUR CONVENIENCE.

WELCOME TO THE "PORT" OF FLORIDA. REALLY?

    in Lifestyle

HERE IN THE STATE OF FLORIDA, GOVERNOR RICK SCOTT HAS ILLUSIONS OF GRANDEUR.  AMONG HIS OTHER "DREAMS" IS HIS PLAN TO TURN FLORIDA INTO A MEGA-PORT FOR OCEAN SHIPPING TO AND FROM THE ORIENT.  HE THINKS THE OPENING OF THE WIDER PANAMA CANAL WILL MAKE THIS A CINCH AND WANTS TO HANDLE THE HUGE NEW CLASS OF PANAMAX SHIPS, INCLUDING POST-PANAMAX AND NEW PANAMAX AT HIS PORTS, INCLUDING JACKSONVILLE AND TAMPA.  IT IS A MAJOR COMPONENT OF HIS REASONING FOR BUILDING A NEW HIGHWAY NETWORK BETWEEN TAMPA AND JACKSONVILLE.

A NUMBER OF MAJOR PROBLEMS, HOWEVER, STAND IN HIS WAY. FOREMOST AND OF IMMEDIATE CONCERN IS THE HUGE DOWNTURN OF ASIAN OCEAN GOING SHIPMENTS. CHINA'S INDICES FOR EVALUATING OCEAN SHIPPING HIT A NEW LOW YESTERDAY, THE LOWEST IT HAS EVER BEEN SINCE CONTAINERIZED SHIPPING VOLUME MEASUREMENT WAS DEVELOPED.  AND THIS MEANS THAT THE REVENUE IS REALLY NOT THERE TO CREATE NEW PORTS OF CALL; IT WILL BE DIFFICULT TO MAINTAIN FULL CAPACITY AT EXISTING PORTS AS WELL.  AND EQUALLY IMPORTANT IS THE FACT THAT NEITHER JACKSONVILLE OR TAMPA IS CAPABLE OF PORT ENTRY BY THE HUGE NEW SHIPS.  TAMPA ADMITS IT WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO HANDLE THE REALLY BIG VESSELS AND JACKSONVILLE'S ENTRY VIA THE ST. JOHNS RIVER WILL REQUIRE MAJOR DREDGING, DREDGING FOR WHICH THERE IS NO FUNDING AVAILABLE.  OTHER PORTS HAVE PROBLEMS AS WELL AND WE'LL TAKE A LOOK AT THE OVERALL PICTURE TOMORROW AT 10 A.M.

CAN FLORIDA AFFORD THE PRICE FOR AN END RESULT THAT IS LIKELY NOT EVEN REALISTIC? AND DOES THE GOVERNOR EXPECT THE TAXPAYERS TO ASSUME THE HEAVY RISK OF PROJECTS THAT ARE HIGHLY SUSPECT FROM THE OUTSET?  WE HOPE YOU'LL JOIN US WEDNESDAY MORNING ON NORTH FLORIDA WRITER LIVE.
