Counselor Mandy Eppley speaks with veterinarian and animal advocate Dr. Linda Bender about the importance of grieving our pets and how they continue to bless our lives even after they pass. Dr. Bender shares the story of losing her precious cat, Wimsey, who she considered to be her best friend for 18 years. Both Mandy and Linda emphasize how important it is to allow yourself to grieve pets, as we do for humans, and to not feel ashamed about it. Linda shares several stories from her collection (one of the largest databases of stories about animals in the world) about how beloved animals have contacted their owners after they pass. She helps people see how these experiences are “normal” and not “paranormal.” She says “grief can motivate us to show up as love in the world.”
Dr. Linda Bender’s love of the natural world began in her childhood backyard. Her innate rapport with animals inspired her to earn a doctorate in veterinary medicine. During the 14 years she spent living in England, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, Linda’s veterinary work included the rescue, rehabilitation, and protection of wildlife, often in remote areas. In 2014 Linda wrote a book called Animal Wisdom: Learning from the Spiritual Lives of Animals (North Atlantic). This book illuminates the undeniable ability for animals to restore our ecological, emotional and spiritual balance.
Her non-profit, From the Heart, has a mission of recognizing that all creatures have lives of meaning and purpose, and provides support for animals in need and strives to help people understand the natural connection between humans and animals, and the mutual need to protect the Earth we share. So it's time to adopt a new pet? And you've already done all your research, right? Temperament? Check. Potential health issues? Check. How big might they get (if a baby). Check. Best types of food? Check. Etc. But have you taken time to research the lifespan of your potential new family member? In the case of some birds, (who can live into their 70's), you could easily find yourself in a situation where the pet could outlive you. What would you do in such a situation? And even in the case of animals such as dogs and cats, with "normal" lifespans, what happens if tragedy strikes, and you unexpectedly pass away before them? Do you have provisions in place to make sure your pet is responsibly taken care of, once you're gone? In this episode of The Missy Show, we discuss pet lifespan and making sure you are aware of the considerations involving this issue. Join us Saturday, November 7th at 5pm Central.
In our November 7th episode, we touched on the lifespan issues involved with having a pet bird. In this episode, we delve deeper into some of the issues involved with becoming a pet parent to a bird. We'll cover the unexpected challenges that can arise while living with your new bird, and help to make sure you're fully prepared, and as well informed as possible, when embarking on your new pet journey. If you're serious about getting a fine feathered friend, then be sure to check out this edition of The Missy Show, Saturday, November 14th, 2015 at 5pm Central. Don't miss it! It just might save you and a potential bird a lot of heartache. And nobody wants that, right?

This episode is being rebroadcast from Michele’s original radio show, “Your Life After Trauma.”
The first really positive step Michele took toward her recovery came in the form of deciding to get a puppy. Mired in a deep depression and feeling overwhelmed by symptoms of PTSD didn’t seem like the right time to become a pet owner but she took the plunge and boy, was it the right decision!
Baylee and Michele met when he was just ten weeks old and they’ve been best buddies ever since. They’ve been through a lot together, including her complete recovery from PTSD. Having him around to mitigate the darkness (he’s fabulously funny and has a very emotional and interactive personality) brought a new light into her life that helped her begin to reach outside of her illness and find the necessary strength to heal.
This episode features three guests who discussed pets and their role in post-trauma recovery. Laura Westerfield, founder of Paws and People Assisting Wounded Warriors(ppaWWs), Nick Kutsukos of Elite K9 Academy in Jupiter and Janet Austin, joined Michele to discuss just how much pets can influence your healing journey.
Michele Rosenthal is a popular keynote speaker, award-winning author and post-trauma coach. Her shows combine scientific research, cutting-edge guests and personal stories that highlight the challenges and successes of deliberately deciding to change the direction of your life.
