People's Free Medical Research Health Clinics

We believe that the government must provide, free of charge,
for the people, health facilities that will not only treat our illnesses, most of which are a result of our oppression, but that will also develop preventative medical programs to guarantee our future survival. We believe that mass health education and research programs must be developed to give all Black and oppressed people access to advanced sCienti c and medical information, so we may provide ourselves with proper medical attention and care.

Point Six of the Black Panther Party Program's Platform of March 29, 1972, explains the reasons for the institution ofthe People's Free Medical Research Health Clinics, which provide free medical treatment and preventative medi cal care for the community. Private hospitals and doctors charge fees far more expensive than poor people can a ord, while public hospitals and clinics are so overcrowded and understa ed that their services are almost totally inade quate. The People's Free Medical Research Health Clinics o er an alternative to this problem.

The clinics provide comprehensive health care for the community. Doctors treat  patients for common physical ailments and refer them to spe cialists if necessary. Laboratory testing is also provided in conjunction with local hospitals.

Along with the Sickle-Cell Anemia Research Foundation, the clinics con duct testing and research for a cure for sickle-cell anemia.

Child health is a serious problem in the Black community, and the clinics have developed a ChildHealth Care Program to meet this community need. The Child Health Care Program provides immunizations; screening and sickle cell anemia iron de ciency anemia, and tuberculosis; referrals; and complete physi cal examinations as well as treatment of illnesses." Building a Pipeline of Workers for Los Alamos National Laboratory at NNMC

    in Current Events

A workforce pipeline is being built in Northern New Mexico, beginning with early childhood development and stretching all the way up to advanced degrees. Los Alamos National Laboratory pulls talent from its own backyard at Northern New Mexico College (NNMC). Initiatives to get girls interested in STEM fields, robot-building competitions and a recent transition from a two-year to a four-year institution have people looking to NNMC for what they'll do next.

Los Alamos National Security, LLC (LANS) is the company that manages the Lab. They began investing in workforce development initiatives more than six years ago, beginning with the nursing and education programs at NNMC. New Mexico's largest health system recently called NNMC nursing graduates their best employees. Now, LANS is making investments in the Chemistry department at NNMC to allow students to have more hands-on experiences

Myeloma Crowd Radio: Dr. Kenneth Anderson, MD, PhD, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute

    in Health

The advances found for multiple myeloma over the past two decades have been extroardinary. Much has been learned, and much has been accomplished with new treatment developments and arguably more discoveries than other cancers in the same time period. The past is impressive for this complex cancer, but there is more work to do. Dr. Ken Anderson helped lead the way for the discovery of new developments over a prestigious career of 40 years. He shares with us a brief look back and what he sees for the road ahead towards a cure.

Dr. Anderson is the Kraft Family Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School as well as Director of the Lebow Institute for Myeloma Therapeutics and Jerome Lipper Multiple Myeloma Center at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. He is a Doris Duke Distinguished Clinical Research Scientist and American Cancer Society Clinical Research Professor. After graduating from Johns Hopkins Medical School, he trained in internal medicine at John’s Hopkins Hospital, and then completed hematology, medical oncology, and tumor immunology training at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Over the last three decades, he has focused his laboratory and clinical research studies on multiple myeloma. He has developed laboratory and animal models of the tumor in it is microenvironment which have allowed for both identification of novel targets and validation of novel targeted therapies, and has then rapidly translated these studies to clinical trials culminating in FDA approval of novel targeted therapies. His paradigm for identifying and validating targets in the tumor cell and its milieu has transformed myeloma therapy and markedly improved patient outcome.
