Directional Sense; How to Find Your Way Around with guest, Jan Carpman
Jan Carpman, PhD is a wayfinding expert with 30+ years experience on hundreds of projects in large, complex, public facilities. Believing that designed environments and their wayfinding systems should respond to the needs of the people who use them, she is proud to have involved thousands of users in her work. A skilled speaker, writer, and coach, Jan is the author (with Myron Grant) of the award-winning books, Directional Sense: How to Find Your Way Around and Design that Cares: Planning Health Facilities for Patients and Visitors. She is a founding Partner in Carpman Grant Associates, Wayfinding Consultants, Ann Arbor, MI.
Directional Sense: How to Find Your Way Around, is a guide for directionally challenged people. It explains that finding your way around is a learnable skill, not a mysterious instinct you’re doomed to live without. A lighthearted introduction to the ins and outs of wayfinding, it provides step-by-step guides to following signs, reading maps, recognizing landmarks, using GPS devices, and more. Along with anecdotes describing how everyone gets lost at times, and photos showing how being turned around is not always your fault, the book offers a wealth of practical advice to help directionally challenged people (and everyone else) confidently get from here to there. . . and back.

This week I welcome to Your Partner In Success Radio Janet R. Carpman, Ph.D., and author of Directional Sense: How to Find Your Way Around.
If you are as directionally impaired as I am, there actually is help! And when I say that I am directionally impaired, I mean it so bad that my dentist leads me back through the labyrinth (as I see it) of his building back to the receptionist desk because they know that I will wander around helplessly until somebody takes pity on me!
Jan Carpman has been thinking about wayfinding ever since she became lost on a Jersey Shore boardwalk as a wandering 3-year-old. Many years later, while directing a unique applied research project at the University of Michigan Medical Center, she found that disorientation accounted for a significant amount of stress experienced by hospital patients and visitors. As I told her during the pre-interview, not even my onboard nav system in my vehicle is of any real assistance because I invariably pick a fight with the voice that is telling me to "turn left here", because she is not the boss of me. But that is a whole 'nother topic.
Jan holds a PhD in Architecture and Sociology (University of Michigan), a Master of City Planning (Harvard University), and a BA in Sociology (University of Rochester) and is a skilled speaker, writer, and coach. She is going to tell us why she wrote this book and share some very important tips and tricks to help us to learn how to navigate.
Jan and her partner are authors of a new book called "Directional Sense: How to Find Your Way Around," a friendly guide for directionally challenged people: those who admit not being able to find their way without a trail of breadcrumbs.
Directional challenges occur in every age group, boomers included. Seeking personal growth, some boomers may choose this phase of life to learn or refresh important life skills – like good directional sense - that have previously escaped them. When people retire, they may travel more and good “way finding” skills can help make travel more pleasant and less stressful.
When women are on their own, as a result of divorce or widowhood, they may need to take on the skills they formerly left to their husbands. Personal navigation may be a new adventure for them. Navigation is one aspect of the ubiquitous available technology, from smart phones to GPS.
Sharpening your directional skills will help you use this technology to your advantage (keeping up with your kids and grandkids) and know how to cope when it doesn’t work.

Tapcin is the culmination of the many common threads of Jan's life. As an early childhood education teacher, founder of a nonprofit literacy program, and director of Developmental Teaching (Tapcin’s parent company), Jan has dedicated her life to improving how children learn.
Jan envisioned the idea of an online lesson planning tool in 2009 upon observing young new teachers using emerging technologies routinely to communicate and share ideas. She realized that to keep pace with the new generation of teachers, new approaches were needed to inspire and support them.
Along with Jay Kashavan, she embarked on the Tapcin journey, learning the ins and outs of being an Apple software developer as they created the ultimate online lesson planning tool. In the fall of 2014, they launched Tapcin and the Tapcin Teachable Moments campaign to assist teachers who used at least 50% of their time devoted to lesson planning, thus enabling them to connect with students in those “teachable moments” when children are fully engaged and excited about learning.
