While baking 30,000 lbs of delicious brownies on a daily basis seems like it should be enough, Greyston Bakery's unique Open Hiring is its hallmark and what it is best known for.
Since its founding in 1982 by Zen Master Bernie Glassman, Greyston, the country’s leading social enterprise, has provided individuals in Southwest Yonkers, NY with employment, skills and resources to lift them out of poverty. Greyston’s unique combination of Open Hiring at the world famous Greyston Bakery and PathMaking services offer a roadmap to assist individuals and families in visualizing and realizing their paths to self-sufficiency. Its spiritually-rooted philosophy fuels community development and a commitment to human growth and potential.
Greyston's open door hiring policy offers employment opportunities regardless of educational attainment, work history, or past social barriers, such as incarceration, homelessness or drug use. Greyston believes that employment is a first step in an individual’s path toward success.
Mike Brady, President and CEO of Greyston Bakery, New York's first Benefit Corporation explains how it all works: anyone that comes to the front door of the bakery is given the chance to work, no questions asked. When a job becomes available the next person on our waiting list is given a job. Greyston provides them with resources, personal development tools and training in professional skills to give them the greatest chance for success in their new job.
The Voice of Leadership is proud to launch this B Corp Series: For People, Planet and Profit, and even more proud to give the first spot in this ongoing series to one of it's favorite brownies, er, organizations ... Greyston Bakery.

"Mr. Speaker, Leona Brady Watson was born on the island of St. Croix. At the tender age of 3, she began her education, which involved walking from Estate Two Friends to Frederikdsted where she attended St. Patrick's School. After finishing the third grade, she journeyed to the United States, and completed her formal education there."
"Upon returning to St. Croix in the late 50's, Mrs. Watson came home with a special yearning for her culture. She spent many years learning about what was a dying art in the Virgin Islands, the art of cariso, from the elders, particularly the ones on the north side of the island and the Frederiksted area. Leona was able to attain and maintain our delicate culture through their stories, soups, and music of days gone by. Leona continues to be honored by various cultural organizations as a tradition bearer for her untiring contribution to the cultural growth of the Virgin Islands, and the knowledge of the history of our beloved homeland."
"Some of Leona's famed works include: Quoted in 3 published books; actress in the film, The Story of Cariso, nationally acclaimed; performance in numerous stage shows, on island and abroad; participated in the 24th Annual Festival of American Folklife, the Virgin Islands; program sponsored by the Smithsonian Institution and the Virgin Islands."
"Leona is also a highly respected herbologist who has been asked most recently to participate in cultural exchange between Africa (Senegal), China and Switzerland."
Jan Romes is a hopeless romantic who grew up in northwest Ohio with eight zany siblings. Married to her high school sweetheart for more years than seems possible, she is also a proud mom, mother-in-law, and grandmother. She likes to read all genres, writes witty contemporary romance, is a part-time fitness trainer, and enjoys growing pumpkins and sunflowers and likes new ways to ways to stay fit. She's a member of Romance Writers of America..
Jan's novels are certainly amoungst the premier in romantic fiction. The first book in one of my favorite of her series is Married to Maggie.
Jan and I will chat about the inspiration behind this fabulous book and the genre of romantic fiction. She is the author of multiple romantic novels.

A ten year vet of MMA, Jan Finney has faced a who's who of the sport.
Having gone on a four fight win streak, she soon took up fights with Cyborg Justino, Liz Carmouche, and Holly Holm before taking an extended break from the sport. She returns to the cage to take on Valentina Shevchenko at Legacy this Froday on AXS TV.
We will catch up with Finney to talk about her return to MMA, and some war stories.
This whole thing has taken on a life us it's own. To me it seems like that should have not take any questsions on the subject at all. I have never seen Bill Belichick or Tom Brady be so uncomfortable in a Press Conference.
Welcome to another episode of #ASTRadio, where I will be discussing the biggest topics in sports. Did the Seahawks LOSE this game more then the Patriots WON it? Is Tom Brady now the GOAT at Quarterback? Why don't everybody believe in the Atlanta Hawks? Do you believe the Cavs made a mistake in trading Andrew Wiggins? Also on today's show, I have three great interviews going on. At 11:15, I'm interviewing Jenny Vrentas (@JennyVrentas) from the Monday Morning Quarterback site on SI. When 11:25 hits, Joe Caporoso from Turn On The Jets (@TurnOnTheJets) will be on the line to discuss the Jets off-season plans. Towards the end of the show at 11:48, freelancer from the Mahopac News and Examiner Monica D'lppolito (@MonicaDlppolito) will be calling in as well. So sit back, relax and enjoy the show!
