Many anti-diabetes medications have been removed from the market because of increased risk of side efffects, such as organ damage and death. A new study now includes insulin in the list of death dealing drugs. Double the risk of fatal heart attacks have been observed in Type 2 diabetics as opposed to those not taking insulin. We are re-visiting service as a path to happiness in 2015. Service has a different meaning for many people. However, true service according to the ancient teachings of wisdom traditions is a path to happiness as well as greatness. Examples of great leaders are, Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, Buddha, Jesus, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Mother Teresa, Princes Diane to name but a few. All these leaders have one thing in common they served humanity and they went beyond a call of duty. Conceptually, one does not attained greatness until after one’s death. The challenge is that one cannot take the road to greatness by being of service; it is the other way around, one must take the road of service to be great. Dr. Martin Luther King said, "Everyone has the power for greatness -- not for fame, but greatness, because greatness is determined by service.” Service is a matter of devotion and love! Thank you for tuning in to Happiness Index. Today we will be exploring the Attitude of Gratitude: Path to Happiness with Kokomon Clottey. The key to happiness is the development and knowing the art of being grateful. “Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend,” as stated clearly by Melody Beattie. Here lies the greatest secret to happiness. One must always be in the frame of mind of gratefulness and cultivate a sense and attitude of gratitude, if one truly want to tap into one’s inner happiness and maintain it. We suggest that we must be grateful for the sun, ocean, billions of stars, the birds that sing and everyone that we share our home “Planet Earth” with. This attitude of gratitude is a path to happiness.

How does one define it? How does mindfulness leads to happier life?
Optimistic thinking is an ancient wisdom. When one exercises optimistic thinking it inspires a host of opportunities, such as peace, love and happiness. Research by Manju Puri and David Robinson at Duke University finds that optimistic people work harder, get paid more, get elected to office more often, and win at sports more regularly. They even live longer. The meaning of optimism according to the Webster’s New World: The tendency to take the most hopeful or cheerful of matters or to expect the best outcome; practice of looking on the bright side of things. Albert Einstein said, “No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it.” We are responsible for our thoughts and our feelings", according to the wisdom of Attitudinal Healing. As such, the key to cultivating and maintaining happiness depends on us as the architects. When one holds an optimistic attitude, one can alter life’s experience from negative to positive. Thank you for joining us at a Happiness Index. Our aim and goal is happiness! Each year on New Year’s Day we give and receive Happy New Year wishes. Aeeshah, my wife and I were in Los Angeles on New Year eve and saw the celebrations of welcoming of the New Year. New Year’s Day was the traditional Rose Parade followed by the college football. Our hostess cooked black eye peas, gumbo and rice. This is an ancient traditional food to ignite good luck and happiness in the New Year. The Attitudinal Healing Connection, the not for profit agency that I work for sent Happy New Year wishes as we have done for 25 years. My inbox was filled with good wishes from corporation, acquaintances, friends and families in return. This ritual of perennial good wishing is telling because almost everyone participates regardless of his or her religious affiliation. Strangers extend awesome wishes with such sincerity and joy that one has to accept and wished them peace and love in return. The challenge is how to continue and maintain our innate peace, joy and happiness throughout the year?

Welcome to “Happiness Index”, in our last episode, our conversation was on Mindful Practices: Journey to Joy. In light of the fact that today is Christmas, our focus is on the importance of the celebration and its implications for us, personally, our family, friends and community. Christmas has nothing to do with the things that we can acquire. Its focus is really not on the haves and the have-nots. It’s true focus is on love and our ability to tap into our love essence and recognize that our essence is love.
This Christmas let us apply mindfulness practices to truly participate and become the spirit of the season. This show is about being happiness and truly celebrating the season by making it a season for all times. One might ask. What is Mindful Practice? How does mindfulness leads to happier life in an age of chaos? We have the Holiday season to remind us. We are closing the days of Hanukkah, celebrating Christmas today, tomorrow we move into Kwanzaa and Kwanzaa ends on the first day of the New Year, 2015. Today is Christmas Day. Let Christmas show us the way. Let us remember that now is the only time there really is.
The moment we have been waiting is here. Today is the day of Christmas! Today is to make merry and to ignite happiness. Our focus and conversation is on the gift of Christmas: A Path to Happiness!
Conceptually, Christmas celebration started as a result of an event that took place two thousand years: the birth of Jesus. In essence Christmas is a gift to mankind. It is telling that on this day, the celebration ignites such happiness that one can only reason that the birth of Jesus was the gift. There is a sense of urgency and shared genuine peace and love everywhere. The strong need to share peace, love and happiness is palpable.
