The Wedding 101 Show host David Rothstein tackles common blunders made by brides and grooms on their big day. “The first mistake they make is having separate rooms at their reception—one room for dinner and dancing, and another room for the bar, photo booth, suite tables and so on,” he says. “But what that does is draw half of your crowd out of the main room, where they hang out. That’s a dangerous thing to do. What you get is two half-weddings. The second mistake is having too many events at the same time. Sometimes couples will have six toasts, and then a video montage, and then Uncle Jim’s going to play the trombone with the band and then there’s a special presentation to your grandfather. The danger here is that if any of the events run longer than scheduled, it gets exhausting for your guests.”
Wanna throw a sophisticated reception? Then be sure to tune into The Wedding 101 Show as host, and veteran Chicago-based band leader, David Rothstein delves into the dancing-between-courses craze. “We do it probably 80 to 90 percent of the time at the weddings we play these days,” he says. “As the term implies, this is dancing between dinner courses, throughout the dinner portion of your evening. It originated in upsate New York, it was a very high-society way of throwing a wedding reception. And over the past 30 years, it has made its way across the U.S. The biggest benefit is that it creates energy and momentum throughout the night. And that, for me, is a key to any successful wedding.”
Never scoff at a wedding band. For among those musicians may be cats who’ve played with some of the biggest acts of all time. That’s the message from The Wedding 101 Show host David Rothstein, whose day job is conducting his own ensemble at receptions throughout the Midwest. “You want a band who’s excited about playing your wedding, who don’t see it as something beneath them—that playing in clubs is the ‘real’ musician work,” he says. “Our male vocalist has toured with Elton John and Stevie Wonder. And our female vocalist has toured with Aretha Franklin and Celine Dion and Mariah Carey. We’ve also got Grammy-winning musicians in the band who do play in clubs, and have recorded hit CDs.”

After years of working in the banking industry in Central New York, David Homick left his suits behind for a more casual gig as a freelance Web Designer. "I love the creative aspect of my work, which was not something that was encouraged growing up.” Perhaps it is all that pent up creative energy that has motivated him to express himself now between the covers of a book.
It took 54 years for Homick to pick up the pen, or in this case the laptop, and start writing his first novel. That's a lot of life experience to draw on. Much of his inspiration comes from his recent interest in spiritual, metaphysical, and so-called paranormal activity.
His first novel, A Lifetime Last Night, is full of metaphysical wisdom and inspiration that is woven into an intriguing, contemporary love story. One of the underlying themes of the story, as well as his life, was inspired by a favorite quote from George Eliot. "It's never too late to be what we might have been."
A second novel, as yet untitled, is currently in the works. "It's who I am now. I'll never stop writing." Homick dreams of quitting his day job to pursue his writing career full-time.
