Tonight's guest is Lennie Watts. Not merely the longtime President of the Manhattan Association of Cabarets and Clubs (MAC), he's an award-winning and internationally-acclaimed cabaret vocalist and recording artist, a director for an endless list of cabaret acts, a creator of several performance workshops, a former booking manager for such clubs as Metropolitan Room as well as the Spirit of New York cruise line (where his discoveries included such future Broadway headliners as Idina Menzel), and his reputation for television appearances such as on Rosie O'Donnel's show will always precede him.
In this segment of The Organic View Radio Show, host, June Stoyer talks to Neurobiologist and Professor Emeritus, at the Free University of Berlin, Dr. Randolf Menzel about his latest research titled, Neonicotinoids Interfere with Specific Components of Navigation in Honeybees. Dr. Menzel pioneered the honeybee as a model system in neuroscience with respect to color vision, olfaction, learning, and memory. Combining levels of analysis from natural behavior to single neurons, he traced perceptual and cognitive capacities to their neural and cellular substrates. He established the first evidence for the role of the insect mushroom body in memory formation and characterized the cellular and neural correlates of different phases of memory. His latest research explores the use of three neonicotinoids, (neonicotinoids, imidacloprid, clothianidin and thiacloprid) and their impact on honeybee navigation. Stay tuned!

NOTHING LIKE A DAME: Conversations with the Great Women of Musical Theater (February 2014) is a collection of exclusive interviews with twenty of the greatest leading women of Broadway, by journalist Eddie Shapiro. “The history of musical theater is full of incredible, indelible female roles,” writes Elaine Paige in her Foreword to NOTHING LIKE A DAME. “Elphaba, Cassie, Reno Sweeney, Nellie Forbush, Millie Dill¬mount, Marian the Librarian, Effie White, Ruth Sherwood, Lorelei Lee…NOTHING LIKE A DAME features women who have devoted the majority of their careers to theater and have won at least one Tony Award. It includes Shapiro's experience interviewing the “cantankerous, outspoken, and utterly charming” Elaine Stritch over tea at the Carlyle on Thanksgiving Day, chatting with the eighty-four year old Angela Lansbury in her Manhattan apartment, and asking Patti LuPone about her start in acting while eating her home-baked bread. Each interview is guided by Shapiro's expert knowledge of these women's careers, Broadway lore, and the details of some of Broadway's most famous (and infamous) musicals. Here also are icons like Chita Rivera, who describes the experience of starring in musicals for the past seven decades, right alongside contemporary Broadway stars like Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, who discuss their roles in the smash-hit Wicked. This collection includes dozens of photographs of the actresses in their best-known roles, making it a must-have for theater lovers. Eddie Shapiro is the author and editor of Nothing Like a Dame: Conversations with the Great Women of Musical Theater.
You’ll have to forgive us, with some new equipment, there’s something just not quite right about the music and segment stings on today’s otherwise top-notch show, but we’ll get it figured out for next week!
Of course, if it’s artful audio mixing that brings you to this show, you are historically in the wrong place!
It’s the art of conversation that keeps people coming back for more of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour week after week …
This week’s often irreverent, frequently informative and occasionally inspiring conversation is all about earthquakes, snakes in Ireland, missing planes from Malaysia, brand new television series on Amazon Prime, lessons filmmakers can learn from Peter Bogdanovich’s first film, controversies surrounding Sarah Jones death and John Travolta’s recent Oscar appearance, “Hannibal”, “Broadchurch”, “Portlandia”, “True Detective” and your friends in podcasting start it all off by remembering a good friend (of “Truth”) who died this weekend.
This is the way that "Hybrid Jazz" rolls - we start off with a plan - and the plan GROWS! It's an absolute thrill to welcome back the incredibly respected guitarist, Joshua Breakstone - that's a GIVEN. Having debuted in 1979, this prolific artist has created a lifetime's worth of projects, toured Japan more than ANY performer that I know, and has been compared to Wes Montgomery on more than one occasion.
The reviews have been stellar regarding Joshua's latest work, "With The Wind and the Rain." All About Jazz and NPR glow when they speak of the musicianship involved here - and another critic speaks of Joshua's "understated eloquence." For some of us, hearing the late Emily Remler in the vibe isn't a bad thing, either! Beautiful playing with a purpose. Our guest's first inspirations were Lee Morgan - then Clifford Brown and Charlie Parker. That's right: trumpet and sax. Both notes and emotion are important for Joshua to convey - oh boy, does he fulfill THAT mission!
We're going to hang in the second hour of the show, so expect audio bliss and lively conversation. Meanwhile, a new development: Uber Producer Matthew Shell will be joined by MTS Creative Consultant and Singer, Kenny McNeil - and they might be joined by Star-On-The-Rise, Sydni Alexander - in our third hour :) Kenny and Sydni have a new song called "Inspire Me" - and it's hard to describe the place where this music takes you. It's as though a teenage Idina Menzel paired with a soulfully pleading prince to her princess - and a love anthem was born. It's exciting to contemplate the future of these talents - and it's a thrill to bring them to you!
The fun starts at one - don't you miss a single moment of "Hybrid Jazz From Trish Hennessey" on 3/13/14!
Tonight at 8pm ET on Ernest Radio Network, it's Beaten Path.
The Oscars happened this past Sunday, and while they are self-serving in their very existence, a few things stuck out. No, we're not talking about John Travolta mispronouncing Idina Menzel as "Adele Dazeem". Rather, when Matthew Mcconaughey won Best Actor, he went on and on about himself and being his own hero. This is opposed to Jared Leto, who won for Best Supporting Actor in the same film Dallas Buyers Club, and acknowledged the millions of people who have lived with HIV, and died from AIDS. Just how self-serving can the Oscars be, anyway?
All this plus NPR news, music, and more.
Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook, challenged us to 'Lean In'. Alright, I will. Today I have the honor of interviewing Wendy Menzel. She is a brilliant finance professional, outstanding mom, and incredible wife. We will discuss Mrs. Sandberg's book, why some have such a problem with her position, work/life balance, and whether or not it is possible to 'Lean In' if you are not in C-Suite. Join us for this outstanding conversation focusing on women's leadership.
