Hybrid Jazz From Trish Hennessey - with Sun Soul Orchestra!

    in Music

Lawd, are you gonna hear some soulfully groovy music on 6/25!  There is not a finer way to wind down June than with the leadership vision of Stephen "Stevo" Theard and Ginger Murphy :)

Yours truly first met Stevo when he was drumming for Peter White's Christmas Tour.  But his reputation certainly preceded that date.  This genuinely revered artist has roots in New Orleans and the flavor of the city shows in a most satisfying way.  When little Stevo was growing up in The Big Easy, he absorbed the sounds of the streets in ways that only special children can. Daddy loved Broadway, too, so that was thrown into the "Gumbo" of his musical heritage.  Matter-of-fact, you can Google Gumbo Child and find Stevo Theard!

He decided to become a musician at 13 - and spent years in earnest study, performance and experimentation.  Years later, internationally known stars can tell you that his work paid off.  Stevo has played with household names, instrumentally and vocally.  He has appeared on TV and on stages across the globe.  Written original music for films.  But one of the best opportunities that has come his way: meeting Ginger Murphy.

Ginger is one of those completely unique Beings that beguile men and enchant women.  A powerfully talented cellist and natural redhead (!!!!!!) whose art has captivated everyone from Snoop Dog to Josh Groban!  Ginger is classically trained, a native of Chicago, and has played with symphonic orchestras as well as recorded for both TV and Film.  She has been involved in over 100 albums - alongside MAJOR stars.  Hip Hop, Rock, Pop, Soul, Jazz.

How these two gravitated toward each other - well, let's just be grateful!  Together, they created Sun Soul Orchestra in order to share the richness of their musical diversity.  And like minds :)  Join us for utterly fabulous music and conversation!

Hybrid Jazz From Trish Hennessey RETURNS - with the extraordinary James Lloyd!

    in Music

Let's face it - we've all been gaga over Pieces of a Dream for DECADES!  So many of us bless the day that drummer Curtis Harmon and bassist Cedric Napoleon got together with our gifted guest: the amazing keyboardist, James Lloyd.  If you can believe it, that was circa 1976!  Teenagers in Philadelphia, this trio rocked the tri-state area.  The name originated from a cover tune by Stanley Turrentine.  The guys thought "Pieces of a Dream" would also fit the image that they were creating in the City of Brotherly Love.

WRTI, Temple University's radio station, supported the group's efforts.  So did a local saxophonist who had cultivated a HUGE name of his own.  Grover Washington, Jr., was taken with Pieces when he saw them on a local TV show called "City Lights." Pretty groovy when you're THAT young and in the House Band for artists passing through town :)  When this buzzworthy musical unit made their way to the respected Bijou in Philly, Grover made it a point to sit in with them.  AND he formed a production company, announcing that POAD would be his first act.  Whew!

James has been associated with his group for so long that we might forget that he has his own identity.  He has written, co-written and/or produced for a LONG time.  Ask Hiroshima or Najee what they think of James Lloyd!  He has strong memories of being involved in superlative projects, too - including albums by Phyllis Hyman and Ornette Coleman.

Piano lessons at six, classically trained and loving Jazz at age 12.  There's a whole lot more wrapped up in that man's soul - after all, he IS from Philly!  Listen to the beautiful colors on "Here We Go", released recently on Shanachie.  We'll talk about his work AND his appearance - with Pieces - at the DuPont Clifford Brown Jazz Festival!  Join us on 6/16!

Hybrid Jazz From Trish Hennessey - with Producer Matthew Shell & MTS Family!

    in Music

By now you know that "Hybrid Jazz" will push boundaries.  Since the launch in 2011, we've examined the nooks and crannies of Jazz - or OTHER :)  Honey, you will be getting OTHER on 5/7!

Matthew Shell is an extraordinary producer that has garnered MTS Music a fabulous reputation.  Based in the Washington, D.C., area, artists have arrived from various pockets of the globe in order to have their projects enhanced by MTS.  We have had Matt on the show serveral times, when there has been a compilation disc to discuss ("Freedom" and "Victory") - and when there have been significant singles that needed attention.

Such is the case for the visit on Thursday, May 7th.  We not only have one exciting release to feature, but TWO!  The first is from IhsAn Bilal and Vicu Schek.  It's got that D.C. House vibe that is a source of pride for the region and it's called "Dance Shake."  We might have a party in The Chat Room - so get ready!  There are multiple talents involved in the song - and some or all might join the fun.  Also, we have another single to present to you - by Molly Moore.  "Natural Disaster" has another direction entirely.  This one cannot be classfied as "Hybrid Jazz", either :-D  If you're stretching the parameters, maybe, but that's not the point here.

The profoundly original Mr. Shell has surprised so many people with his creativity.  And blown away yours truly with the caliber of talent that work with him.  It's ridiculous not to share this sheer joy with an audience craving authentic music! Besides, Matthew is about to launch his new collection of songs by various singers/writers.  Called "Spiritual Relationship: The Deeper Meaning", it truly reflects the faith and vision that our main guest possesses.

We hope that you'll join us!

Hybrid Jazz From Trish Hennessey: We're Back with Music & Memories!

    in Music

Did you miss us?  Well, we missed YOU!  Thank you for your patience while "Hybrid Jazz" was on hiatus.  There was a move involved - and none of us knew what that move would entail.  Or what would be our circumstances when we landed.  MUCH has changed.  And, speaking from the heart, this host is proud to be back on ONLINE Radio!  Having heard much terrestrial Radio in the past several months, I have to say that I'm disappointed.  But still have hope in that format to present music/thoughts/news.  For this moment in time, however, it's empowering to be able to do this kind of show the way that it's supposed to be done - with no one looking over shoulders, no one offering advice or dictates as to how it's supposed to go. This show has been created by Trish Hennessey - the one typing ;)  If this kind of show can, eventually, also morph into a full-time radio station on the dial, cool.  If not: cool again!  No sweat.  We're just spreading the Gospel of Jazz, y'all.  And we'll do so joyfully!

There is no guest for this first "comeback" show - we'll get to guests later.  For our return, we'd like to focus on new music and treasured songs to make you smile.  We desperately need to smile!  Anything that "Hybrid Jazz" can do for you in that regard, it's an honor.  Nepal.  Baltimore.  Loved ones are on our minds.  And you will FEEL the love in this show on 4/30 - which just happens to be "International Jazz Day!"

Let your imagine run wild....be open to music that you've never heard.  Enjoy the colors, shapes, patterns and peace of all kinds of Jazz, etc.  That's why this show IS.  And it cannot be done without YOU.  Thank you!
