I am continuing my audio blog, moving away from my experiences with my journey with my mother to patient and healthcare stories.  It is my hope that these stories will be informative and instructive.  When you hear them, you may think, is she making this up.  No, they are real.

Social Justice : Healthcare Disparities and “Obamacare”

    in Current Events

There was so much controversy about passing  “Obama-care”, officially known as The Affordable Care Act, but after all the dust has settled, there is no improvement in the health disparities between people of color in America and white Americans. Healthcare policies were written by those who were ill-equipped to address the issues that poor un-insured people face. Disparities occur in the quality of care received  (Care by Provider) even when income, health insurance and access to care are taken into account. Patients from racial and ethnic minorities often fare far worse than their white counterparts on a range of health indicators: life expectancy, infant mortality, prevalence of chronic diseases and insurance coverage, among others. We also know our health is influenced by more than what happens in a health care setting. Our health is influenced by the conditions in which we live, where we work, where our children play (Care Needed due to Circumstances). Those social determinants of health play a significant role in contributing to health disparities.

A year ago I attend a Pri-Med  conference in New York City which is a primary care (internal medicine) conference. There were all of the Northeast medical institutions represented with professors paid to teach the latest and greatest American Medical Association decision about  “ standard of care” in the land. There were holographic presentations from prestigious university medical school. The case study was of a 62 year old black American woman with diabetes, obesity, hypertension and early signs of cardiac and renal pathology. The panel's general attitude was that the patient “did not want to change her health status”.

Take Back your Healthcare - with Rocky Bilhartz MD

    in Health

Medicine should be about the diagnosing, treating, and preventing of disease. But, in America, we’ve gotten all that mixed up. The patient-physician relationship has been evaporated and has been invaded by third-parties fueling flames that are entirely unhelpful to actual patient care.   Healthcare has become one of the most polarizing topics in the United States. Fewer and fewer people are finding value in America’s medical system, as growing distrust continues to mount.

Join us as we speak with Rocky Bilhartz, MD author of  Finding Truth in Transparency: Our Broken Healthcare System and How We Can Heal It  - a riveting uncensored look into the healthcare problems our country is facing - this book gives a peek behind the “Iron Curtain” of medicine and you will be shocked by what you find there.  Dr. Bilhartz conveys an unprecedented understanding of why physicians are getting out of medicine, why your medical bills are too high, and why your insurance plan is too confusing.

A practicing physician in the field interventional cardiology and cardiovascular disease, Dr. Bilhartz is a graduate of Rice University and received a joint Medical Doctor (M.D.) and Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) degree with specialization in Health Organizational Management from Texas Tech University Health Science Center.

As a doctor, author, and speaker, his mission is to help you take back your healthcare.
