Big Picture Health Care Trends & A Legislative Update

    in Business

On this week's show, hosts Andrew Dietz and Doug Field talk with special guests from copatient, Brighton Health Plan Solutions and TASC.

The first guest is Tom Torre, CEO at copatient, a health care expense management company. In this segment, Tom joins the hosts to discuss the big health care trends that copatient is seeing in the market today and why copatient exists. As an industry veteran with past executive roles at FIS Global and Alegeus Technologies, Tom will also touch upon copatient’s medical bill review and negotiation service and out-of-network claims management service and what benefit these services have to health plans, employers, brokers and TPAs.

The second guest is Simeon Schindelman, CEO of Brighton Health Plan Solutions (parent company of MagnaCare). The traditional health care system fails to align the interests of the key players, doesn’t put consumer care first and also underserves other key stakeholders, such as care providers, plan sponsors, families of patients and brokers/agents. Educating plan sponsors and plan participants about options and tradeoffs, while developing trusting relationships so they value advice being offered, will improve their ability to access and use the health care system most appropriately. In this interview, Simeon and the hosts talk about thoughtful approaches to lowering health care costs, improving quality and increasing the satisfaction of all participants in the health care system.

The final guest on this week's program is Jason Westphal, legislative analyst at TASC. As head of TASC’s Governmental Affairs team, a member of ECFC and former chief of staff in the Wisconsin State Assembly, Jason will provide listeners with insights on legislative issues pertaining to compliance for the small employer, document storage, sharing and tracking, the Employer Shared Responsibility Mandate and ERISA.

2016 Outlook for Health Care & Benefits

    in Business

The new season of HealthCare Consumerism Radio gets underway this morning as hosts Andrew Dietz and Doug Field welcome special guests from ECFC and Acclaris. Topics on today's show will include the “Cadillac” tax, account-based plans and more, with an underlying focus on an industry outlook for the year ahead.

The first guest is Bill Sweetnam, the legislative and technical director for ECFC, a leading non-profit organization dedicated to maintaining and expanding employee benefit programs on a tax-advantaged basis. In this interview, Bill will discuss being a part of the ECFC for the past six months and the significant strides the organization is poised to make in advancing health care consumerism in 2016. A 30-year industry veteran, Bill will also discuss the work underway, the repercussions of the “Cadillac” tax and the ongoing initiative of the ECFC to repeal it.

The second guest on the show is Seth Ravine, the chief revenue officer for Acclaris, a Willis Towers Watson company. With a new year now underway, some things still don’t change. The two core components that are needed to drive effective health care initiatives will remain the same: long-term engagement and an integrated experience. However, there will be changes in the year ahead to make those components a reality. In this interview, Seth will discuss his five industry predictions for a successful new year.

GENDER AND THE HEALTH CARE BUSINESS

    in Current Events

With the healthcare business being what it is today, it seems like all the health care providers are parts of big organizations and most of those organizations are headed up by men. So if there is a difference between men and women in the way patients are treated and care is dispensed, what does it mean if most of the direct providers are female and the head honchos are male?

    Lots of questions, some answers.

Andrea Piatt, PhD., ABPP, is the principal and founder of Commonwealth Psychology Associates in Massachusetts. She is a board certified clinical neuropsychologist who specializes in assessment of adults with neurological injury or disease, medical conditions, learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder, and or emotional problems that impact academic or work life. And she is interested in helping women providers be owners and not just worker bees when it comes to helping patients.

USVI Health Care Through the Years Includes Dr. Knud Hansen's Contribution

    in Culture

The Department of Health of today functions as both the state regulatory agency and the territorial public health agency for the U.S. Virgin Islands.

As set forth by the Virgin Islands Code, Titles 3 and 19, the Department of Health (DOH) has direct responsibility for conducting programs of preventive medicine, including special programs in Maternal and Child Health, Family Planning, Environmental Sanitation, Mental Health, and Drug and Substance Abuse Prevention.

DOH also is responsible for health promotion and protection, regulation of health care providers and facilities, and policy development and planning, as well as maintaining the vital statistics for the population.

DOH provides Emergency Medical Services, issues birth and death certificates, performs environmental health services, and conducts health research and surveys. The Department is also responsible for regulating and licensing health care providers and facilities, and assumes primary responsibility for the health of the community in the event of a disaster.

An Obstetrician, Surgeon and General Practitioner, Dr. Knud Knud-Hansen was born in Denmark. He received his early education in Copenhagen and upon completion he entered the University to pursue a medical career. Dr. Hansen in his autobiography, From Denmark to the Virgin Islands, describes these years as "long years of happy misery". To support himself through medical school he taught Zoology in a Miss West's Higher Girls School and doubled as a news critic for a newspaper syndicate.

When slaves became ill or their sense of justice was stifled, they often sought help in the spiritual world and went to the “Obeah man”. With rituals and magical objects, he could restore health and a sense of justice.
