    Is Trans the New Gay?

    in LGBT

Kudos to the Transgender community for finally getting the positive spotlight they deserve. Celebrities Janet Mock, Laverne Cox, Chaz Bono and Caitlyn Jenner have truly helped kick down doors and ignite thought provoking conversations about another aspect of human sexuality. However, some of the media exposure seems a bit contrived and competitive as if networks are trying to 'one-up' the other by including a Trans topic or character in their programming.

Most recently rumors spread of the Real Housewives of Atlanta adding a Trans person to their cast. That being said, are Black gay men no longer the hot ticket on reality television. Has their season runs its course, and if so is it wise for the Trans community to try to fill that void? Will it devalue their struggle or take things to the next level.

This is going to be a very exciting conversation with special guests Tyesse Jackson and Kentay Williams.

REACHING OUT TO STUDENTS THROUGH STUDENT AUTHOR VISITS WITH DEBBIE HILBISH

    in Culture

ENVISION THIS: Reaching out to young people to inspire them to read, write, and create.

Debbie Hilbish is with us to share her vision, passion and mission to inspire students to read, write and create. She reaches out to as many people as possible to share what they do at Student Author Visits, Inc. (SAVI) founded by Larry James, a 70+ great grandfather, artist, writer of music and author of children’s books. Debbie became Chairperson and Secretary at SAVI after retiring from a career with the United States Post Office, publishing books of her poetry, and hosting eight-week authors’ fairs at The Reader’s Oasis book store in Quartzsite AZ.

SAVI started because “America’s economy began to fail in 2007 and millions of citizens are still struggling, plus the fact that the income disparity gap in our country has widened every year for at least the last twenty years has brought us to the point where it’s impossible for many parents to purchase books for their children.” It is a free program provided to elementary fourth grade classes and boys and girls clubs in selected areas. At the beginning of each visit, Larry introduces himself and thanks the students for inviting him. He reads the first chapter of one of the chapter books he has written and illustrated. The children than get to listen to one of the age appropriate songs on our music cd. The question and answer segment is next. Children ask good questions like: How do you write, illustrate, or publish a book? The program usually last about an hour.  At the end of our visit each student receives a FREE SAVI PACK which consists of: 1 copy of the signed chapter book, 1 CD with 8 (eight) age appropriate songs, and a BOOKWORM BUDDY BUTTON.

    GAY CONVERSION THERAPY – REALLY?

In case you never heard of it, some people think they can convert gays, especially young people, into heterosexuals by using a type of “therapy.”  Really!  Of course this assumes that being gay is like a bad habit or mental illness that can be cured.  So what is this all about, does it help, does it hurt, and what are we doing about it?

Oregon is one state among several that recently passed a law prohibiting conversion therapy, and other states are considering such bans.

Samantha Ames is an attorney with the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) knows about conversion, what it’s supposed to do and what it really does. She’s served as a Policy Fellow in Washington, D.C. before moving to San Francisco to work as a staff attorney focusing on conversion therapy cases. She has testified on the harms of conversion therapy and the constitutionality of efforts to end it before both state and federal bodies, as well as at the United Nations Committee Against Torture in Geneva, Switzerland.

Please join us to learn more about conversion and the hype around it.
