Why Did Sophie Schiller Race to Tibet

    in Writing

Sophie Schiller was born in Paterson, NJ and grew up in the West Indies amid aging pirates and retired German spies. Among other oddities her family tree contains a Nobel prize-winning physicist and a French pop singer.

She loves stories that carry the reader back in time to exotic and far-flung locations. She was educated at American University, Washington, DC and lives in Brooklyn, New York. She is currently working on a new historical thriller set in the Caribbean.

While Sophie was writing Race to Tibet, she had set the first scene of the novel—an altercation between Gabriel Bonvalot and General Prejevalsky that may or may not be real—in Café Tortoni, a well-known café on the Rue des Italiens in Paris. But until today she had never known about the existence of this painting, even though she had been to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston numerous times, although not prior to March 18, 1990, the day it was stolen.

To me, Cafe Tortoni, with its sophisticated ambiance and suave reputation, known for being the meeting place of politicians, intellectuals, scholars, dandies, and ladies of the demi-monde seemed to be the perfect setting to place two opposing characters, and how much more so now that I can see it through Manet's eyes.

According to Sophie, "All I can say is, Wow! and pray that someday Chez Tortoni is restored to its rightful place in the Isabella Stewart Gardner museum, one of Boston's great cultural treasures. I spent close to 2 years researching the book before I ever put pen to paper. I feel I learned so much about the geography, the history, the culture, and the Great Game that I could teach a course on it! I still hope that one day I can visit Tibet."

Jennifer Raygoza, Queen of The Guardians

    in Writing

Jennifer Raygoza lives in Corona, California with her husband and children. Although she developed a love for writing poetry at the young age of 12, she did not want to become a writer when she was young. With dreams of becoming a Marriage Counselor and majoring in Psychology, she was given another goal to pursue. Although that dream did not work out, she provides relationship counseling for her family and friends.

In 2013 Jennifer published her first book, The Guardians. Originally it was a story written for fun, and out of curiosity it was self-published. Little did she know that it would be a hit with vampire lovers. Fans encouraged her to write Part Two in the series. While working on another project, she pushed it back to write Part Two in the series at the request of her fans. The third and final book in The Guardians series came come out in September, 2014.

Her latest novel, The Silver Lining, is due to be released next month -- May 2nd, 2015, to be exact.

Fun Info: Rumor has it that part one in this series sat around on a desk for five years unfinished, and once it was completed she held back publishing it for fear that no one would like it.

Why Is Emily Wallace Scarred for Life

    in Writing

Emily Wallace is a motivational speaker and inspirational author of her unforgettable autobiography, Scarred for Life, an inspirational book that illustrates the struggles that she faced during her childhood.

One day in 1980, Emily returned home from her daily learning environment, to find a house filled with nothing but emptiness. Her mother and her siblings were gone without leaving a forwarding address. This was the same day that Emily endured emotional distrust and experienced her childhood being snatched away from her within moments.

After being abandoned by her mother, Emily realized that living on the dangerous streets of a major metropolitan city was a prerequisite to survival. While spending the remaining of her childhood on the streets, Emily experienced hunger that was so bad, it led to her eating out of the city owned garbage cans.

However, hunger was by far not the only horrific thing that Emily encountered as a motherless child struggling to bear with the pressure of being homeless. Aside from experiencing deadly hunger, Emily also faced things ranging from being brutally beaten by a 28 year old to losing her innocence at the age of eleven, after being forcefully raped by 2 grown men.

Scarred for Life narrates Emily's story, along with her thoughts, feelings, and emotions as she tried to succeed surviving on the streets. She tells of sleeping in vacant houses and under porches and experiencing child molestation by her older two brothers. She shares the stories of those who tried to help her and those who would not. Honest and shocking, Scarred for Life provides insight into the actual life of a little homeless girl and the horrors one can experience when living on the streets.
