Research Methods in Criminal Justice – Ethical Considerations

    in Training

Brought to you by The American Public Safety Training Institute (TAPSTI) www.tapsti.org, this 2 hour session will review the work of Dr. Peter Kraska and Dr. W. Lawrence Neuman and their excellent textbook entitled “Criminal Justice and Criminology Research Methods” (2012, 2nd ed.).  Thinking about your application of ethics in your research project is critical to your completing enough preparation to be successful. Ethical conduct ensures that the "knowledge–power dynamic" which we understand so well in public safety generates knowledge only from credible research. As a criminal justice researcher you have a professional and ethical obligation to create new knowledge that is useful, accurate, credible, and that can be generalized across a wide population. The purpose of this seminar is to ensure you understand and appreciate the ethical implications of your research as well as the potential adverse impacts that research can have on others.

How one woman went from Fashion to Faith

    in Motivation

Counselor Mandy Eppley speaks with ordained minister, Rev. Rebecca Nagy, about her life journey that started out as a successful fashion designer in NYC. She loved this job, but when she had a spinal injury and surgery that left her in a leg brace, she could no longer continue in this field. This was both physically and emotionally painful for her to accept. She moved back to Charlotte to take another job that ended up not being what she thought it would be. During this same time she was also ordained as a non-denominational minster. She “jumped off the ledge” to manifest this new dream in 1998 by officiating weddings, speaking at churches and holding classes. Although this was great, it wasn’t her FULL dream. When her father died she heard him say “Do what God wants to you to do. You know what it is.” Two weeks later a church called her needing a minster. Now two years later she has grown the church, the Spiritual Light Center of Charlotte, into an active community. Mandy summarizes by saying “When we get turned on to our authentic calling we will go to any lengths to go for it.” They also discuss Step 5, Spiritual Fortitude, from the Model of Heart-Centered Grief and how important it is to know that you are never alone. Mandy and Rebecca will both be speakers at SHiFT Charlotte on March 19, 2016.

Rev. Rebecca Nagy is the Spiritual Leader of Spiritual Light Center of Charlotte (formerly Unity Center for Spiritual Living).  She is a non-denominational minster, graduating from Sancta Sophia Seminary in 1996 and ordained through Light of Christ Community Church. An award-winning Wedding Officiant, Meditation Teacher, Spiritual Teacher and author of the popular CD, “Instant Calm”, Rebecca is also one of the featured speakers at SHIFT Charlotte 2016, teaching her classic, “Dream State University”. www.slcofcharlotte.org

42 New Ethical Ka'venants of Ma'at with Baba Heru Semanj

    in Spirituality

This week we are honored to have special guest, Heru Ankh Ra Semahj SePtah, presiding elder of the Shrine of Ptah on Ra Sekhi Radio to discuss the NEW 42. The 42 Laws of MA'AT have, called for the formation of a MA’AT MILITIA. While militias have traditionally armed themselves with weapons of violence- guns, knives, swords, etc. This MA’AT Militia will have a different purpose. We will arm ourselves with MA’AT ethical codes in order to address contemporary issues which plague our AfraKAmenta communities. Our ancient SMAI TAUWI Nile Valley ancestors left us 42 Confessions of MA’AT which we honor, and which will remain intact as written on ancient papyri. Due to the passing of time and changing of lifestyle, we people of Afrakan ascent are challenged to supplement our MA’AT ethical codes.

Join us as we explore the New 42 and gain deeper overstanding of the peace of restoring MA'AT to our lives, our communities, and the Earth once again.

    The Hidden Side of Fashion

    in Business

On December 16 my guest will be Isabel Varela.  Isabel stands at the forefront of fashion as a true conservationist who glorifies the art of design by continuously redefining the craft behind draping, pattern making, sketching and sewing. Isabel’s eye for meticulous tailoring detail and use of sustainable fabrics continues to influence the fashion realm, impact the environment and empower women across the globe.

Isabel’s versatility and proficient knowledge in tailoring, belief in transparent manufacturing, and reducing waste policy ignited the brand’s identity.  Behind the architectural-inspired patterns mixed with fashion-forward aesthetic stands the holistic designer, fueling the American label. The creative use of neutral colors encompasses the designer’s intuitive capability to transform street fashion into a ready-to-wear intrinsic lifestyle.

Isabel has made her mark in the fashion industry by leveraging her proficiency in bespoke tailoring. Convinced from a very early age that fashion design was her calling, she began immersing herself into the fundamentals of fashion, studying at Louisiana State College where she completed a global fashion field study in China, earning a degree in Apparel Design. Fueled by her interest for pushing the needle with the intention to make design more meaningful, she took an extensive Master Class At Dupperre Mode and Textile Ecole in Paris, France.

After gaining insights into the inner workings of retail, she followed her passion to New York City where the premature concept for Izabel Varela, Inc. began to spark. Determined to turn her eco-friendly fashion fantasy into reality, she began working at Suit Supply as a Tailoring Manager in Manhattan to help fund this dream. The sustainable brand is determined to re-address the natural fundamentals that enhance and redefine the standards of beauty.
