Tonight's special guest is Debra Betesh from New York City, a social activist who created the 'Precious Child Act,' a bill against sexual abuse to ensure safety for New York's children. Debbie was inspired when a community member near and dear to her heart who'd been sexually abused as a child later took his own life. She explains, "The 'Precious Child Act' will step in to defend the wellbeing of our children and mandate instruction on important matters." Debbie points out, "The current public school curriculum mandates instruction on child abduction, but does not teach children about sexual abuse. This is where the Precious Child Act will step in." She says, "By approving this act, children will be educated about sexual abuse in school." Here are detailed explanations of the act's three sections: Part I mandates automatic DNA testing for anyone arrested for the sexual assault of a child under 13 years old. Part II mandates child sexual abuse education in New York State's curriculum. Students in sixth through eighth grade would receive instruction via the state-approved video, 'Child Sexual Predators: The Familiar Stranger'. Part III will be Erin Merryn's Law. This law will require schools to add age-appropriate education on sexual exploitation and abuse when they are taught about abduction. Children in grades kindergarten through eighth will benefit from this education. Debbie invites all activists, parents and survivors to attend a rally in Albany on Feb 24th at the New Your State Capitol building. As she explains explains. "By joining forces with the Precious Child Act, we will be proactive about children's safety. Eventually, I'd like to get this act passed nationwide, because I know it will truly make a difference."

SPECIAL TOPIC: Erin Merryn -- Tonight we offer you a repeat of an appearance by one of NAASCA's best known family members, Erin Merryn, from SCAN Episode 186 in 2011. Erin's gone on to successfully present arguments to about half the states in our country for the mandated teaching of age appropriate curriculum on sexual abuse education to students in public schools. Here's the show description from 2011: Tonight's SPECIAL GUEST is Erin Merryn, the 26 year old child abuse survivor and advocate who began "a crusade to save the children of Illinois from the childhood I could not be saved from. It is a silent epidemic because we are not talking about it with children." Illinois Senate Bill 2843, know as "Erin's Law," was passed unanimously Feb 14, 2011, and has spawned a set of similar laws in several other states. The purpose of the law is to inform and protect students from sexual abuse, to mandate school districts implement and educate students on sexual abuse. School boards are instructed to adopt age appropriate curriculum on sexual abuse education to students grades pre-k through 5th grade. As Ms Merryn points out, "Growing up in Illinois public schools every year I was educated with my classmates on tornado drills, fire drills, bus drills, stranger danger, and learned the 8 ways to say "NO" to drugs through D.A.R.E." She continues, "As a child I never had to take cover because of a real tornado. I never had to stop, drop, and roll or run out of a burning building. I never had to evacuate a school bus due to an emergency, but I had the knowledge to know what to do if any of those situations happened. Where was the drill on how to escape a child molester? Where was the lesson plan on sexual abuse, safe touches, and safe secrets?"

Fans of Erin Merryn's heart-wrenching debut memoir Stolen Innocence were left wondering what would become of an emotionally fragile Erin after her confrontation with the reality and repercussions of being a child of incest and molestation. In Living for Today, Erin chronicles how she cultivated the strength to face her abuser and eventually found relief from years of emotional restlessness, while also igniting the beginnings of a new fearless journey. Living for Today chronicles that journey, which began with the unearthing of private shame, releasing of ugly memories, letting go of guilt, and becoming the mouthpiece of millions of her generation.

Best Life Barb will interview recent Oprah Show guest, Erin Merryn about the ugly horrors of child sexual abuse. Erin is a survivor of molestation and incest and is the mouthpiece of millions in her generation. Call in to ask for advice or to talk about this oh so secret shame that many people have endured.
Erin Merryn makes a special visit to the Howitzer and Buzz-saw Show. Last week, Mike "the Buzz-saw" Asti and George "the Howitzer" Gerbo spent most of their time covering the Penn State scandal with an obvious focus on the most impacted sports figure, Joe Paterno. This week, the guys bring a unique perspective to one of the most controversial scandals in history. Erin, herself, a victim of child abuse, now speaks as an advocate against this horrible crime and is a voice for victims everywhere. Throughout her travels, Erin has been seen on national programs such as "Good Morning America," "Oprah," and "The Montel Williams Show." Her tale is inspirational and this is one HBS you can't afford to miss. Following their time with Erin, Mike and George will shift back to form, discussing the start of the college basketball season, the current state of the NHL, and the possibility the Howitzer may have the HBS NFL picks title buzz-sawed right out from under him. Sidney Crosby seems ever so close to a return. How will this change the already surging Penguins? The MLB Hot-Stove crock pot is even starting to simmer. The Howitzer and Buzz-saw Show. Conquering sports radio, one day, at a time....
