There's a quiet revolution happening in the way we die. Almost half of all Americans now die in hospice care, often at home, and a vast industry has sprung up to meet the growing demands.
More than 76 million baby boomers are starting to turn 65 and 97% of Americans want to be better informed about end-of-life care. I have been working for several years in a variety of nursing homes, providing psychotherapy to people, who, in one way or another are facing the end of their lives. This has been one of the most difficult and rewarding professional and life experiences I have ever had. I have learned that the closer we get to taking our own demises seriously the more we confront a decision to either give up on life and merely exist or live as if every second is precious and should be lived to the fullest regardless of life circumstances. Tonight I will discuss some of the reasons people opt to exist while others retain their deisre to live. These factors include family support, religious beliefs, unresolved guilt, shame and other conflicts as well as the presence or absence of a deepseated belief that personal choice is always available and that we are the sole owners of our own life. I will discuss my role as a professional in dealing with people suffering existential depression and feelings of meaninglessness as they live out their final time in nursing home facilities.
Life Coach Ade is flying solo for "Swimming Through the Deep End of Life."
A lot of people feel like they have been dropped in the deep end of the ocean without any safety gear or knowledge of how to swim. Life can feel that way sometimes and we can get caught up thinking about our lack of skills and safety equipment to manage the feeling of metaphorically drowning.
However, it is also important to remember that we are buoyant and full of talents to be each other’s life boats. Life Coach Ade will remind you that you can ride the waves. You can breathe. And if all else fails, you can float until you catch the rhythm of the stroke.
Join Life Coach Ade for a conversation that will awaken the strength inside of you to navigate the deep waters.
