His career began working in a variety of learning and development roles for Boots the Chemists including e-learning and behavioural competency development roles. He then went on to lead the learning and development function at Nottingham Building Society introducing a blended learning approach, overseeing the skills and behavioural development aspects of a major core systems implementation and designing the society’s first management and executive development programmes.

At WeThrive we spend our working lives talking to people whose lot is to create or maintain an engaged workforce. They don’t always put it like that – the expressed desire might be to have a happy staff, or to improve employee retention, but what they actually want in the end is a workforce that really wants to engage with the company and their work. That doesn’t just happen, of course; it’s a consequence of getting a lot of other things right, so since 2011 we have been working on a way to help HR and L&D people move employee engagement out of the realm of ‘good idea, but…’ and into the very heart of the people-management efforts.

David is also President of the Professional Mediators’ Association – the independent trade body for mediators in the UK.

Craig is the UK business analysis and solution architecture manager within National Grid running a matrixed team of internal employees plus contractors and third party suppliers. His focus is success through people by developing individuals and teams within and outside his organisational remit by aligning individual and organisational needs, and building an inclusive culture.
He is a skilled facilitator and enjoys designing and creating sustainable processes and events that engage and inspire individuals and teams at all levels of the organisation.
His team have recently rated high engagement scores and in the radio show Craig explains the underlying thinking and processes he uses to build, manage and engage his team by supporting staff and helping them be successful at the heart of management practices

Effective engagement requires both an individual and collective focus but it seems that many companies focus on engaging the individual rather than thinking about the collective units – teams. The basic unit at work is the team, with a line manager at the helm, and there’s an argument that human beings as social creatures require high levels of engagement with their social working environment as a pre-requisite to individual engagement. Is it a chicken or egg scenario? Should companies be focusing on both from different, or similar, angles? Either way, as more research looks at group effectiveness and inclusiveness at work, there’s doubt we need to focus more on engaging the collective as well as the individual.
