Another homicide has rocked the small town of Fallsburg, NY. In a cabin nestled deep in the woods two male victims are discovered, both gun shot victims. One is deceased the other one is barely alive. But it is not the murder itself that has detectives Jean Whitley and her new partner Marty Keal frantic to find out the answers of what occurred in that cabin, but it is the identities of the two small children also found at the scene. One child is quickly identified but the other a young boy remains a mystery. The only one with possible answers lies with the man who lay critically wounded and unconscious in the hospital because the unidentified boy either can not or will not speak to tell the investigators who he is and what happened in that cabin that left one man dead and another barely hanging on …

Focus Hollywood: Comedians In Dramatic Roles

    in Movies

They make us laugh, by the funny things they say and the funny things they do. Comedians paint a picture of their lives as it relates to their environment and makes it relevant to us. So naturally, we expect to see them in stand-up comedy spots, specials, sitcoms, and comedic roles in movies. Yet a select few have made the transition over to the "other" side of the room, and delved into dramatic films. Tonight, our conversation is focused on three such professionals: Jackie Gleason, Mo'nique and Jamie Foxx.

There are three names that come to mind, when I think of great black actors in cinema today; Idris Elba, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and David Oyelowo. Each has etched their name in Hollywood as leading men of ability, good looks and great presence when it comes to the parts they portray. American film makers have entrusted their works to these gentlemen....even though they're British. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, some of our countries greatest black actors are actually British. So why not start a converse about some of their contributions to "American Cinema". Join us as we discuss the theme, "Focus Hollywood: Black Actors...The British Invasion!".

F IS FOR FACTS - Writers Tricks of the Trade - Episode 12

    in Writing

In the old Dragnet show, Sgt. Joe Friday used to say, "The facts, ma'am, only the facts." But when a writer is creating a book or story part of their process is making sure to check facts, particularly when they are setting out a particular set of circumstances. If you get it wrong, some of your readers will know and possibly spread the word. The internet is a wonderful source of information, but if you can't find what you want, let your fingers do the walking. Once you've figured out who might have the information you need, pick up the phone and call. It might be a friend, or the public relations division of a police department, hospital, public entity or any number of possibilities. When Morgan St. James was writing "Betrayed," she needed to know what would happen in the late 1950s if an inmate in an Illinois prison was beaten to a point where they had to be on lifesupport. The information was not readily available on the internet, so she called the public relations department at the prison in Illinois and discovered her answer, The Public Relations officer researched her and called back with the information that the policy had changed over the years. What would have happened now, wasn't the cae then. Back then the inmate would have been kept in the prison infirmary. So, St. James was able to portray the scene correctly for the era.

Okay, let's assume you've got the facts, details and any other pertinent information. How much does your reader REALLY want to know? Are you overwriting and boring them with details fans of your genre really are not interested in?Is the technical information much more than they care to read? Do they want the story to just keep moving?

In a lively discussion authors Morgan St. James, Dennis N. Griffin and Eric James Miller will share their knowledge and experience when it comes to, "Just the facts, ma'am."

Native actors to Adam Sandler, "Our dignity is not for sale!"

    in Culture

In news making international headlines, several Native actors were told "If you guys are so sensitive, you should leave,...", in response to their concerns of denigrating and racist portrayals of Native people. They left the production.
Hollywood has long been known for stereotyping Native characters, or portraying the white hero who saves the day for the Natives as if they were incapable of overcoming insurmountable adversity.
One Navajo actor, Loren Anthony, originally refused to participate in the film, but changed his mind when he was told a cultural consultant was hired to ensure a "tasteful representation" of Natives. They told me it was going to be a comedy, but it would not be racist he said. Other Native actors and actresses expressed their concern, but were ignored and told they should leave. When they left, including the consultant, the story went viral and was reported on CNN International.
Critics say they should have expected anything different because it is satire. The definition of satire is:

    1. the use of irony, sarcasm, ridicule, or the like, in exposing, denouncing, or deriding vice, folly, etc.

    2. a literary composition, in verse or prose, in which human folly and vice are held up to scorn, derision, or ridicule.

    3. a literary genre comprising such compositions.
Netflix, who signed Sandler defended defended him, "The movie has ridiculous in the title for a reason: because it is ridiculous. It is a broad satire of Western movies and the stereotypes they popularized, featuring a diverse cast that is not only part of -- but in on -- the joke."
David Hill, Choctaw, says the producers has called back the consultant and those who left. We'll be speaking with David Hill and others about their experiences with this racial stereotyping. Please join us friday evening on Eaglemanz: Chahta Nation.
