HWTP Sports Talk: Live Wed May 13 - Special Guest Author Jennifer Ring

    in Sports

Jennifer Ring is a professor of political science at the University of Nevada, Reno. She is the author of Stolen Bases: Why American Girls Don’t Play Baseball. "This revealing book, which makes an important contribution to sports and women's history, will interest anyone curious about an overlooked segment of amateur athletics."—Craig Clark, Booklist

In 2010 twenty American women were selected to represent Team USA in the fourth Women’s Baseball World Cup in Caracas, Venezuela; most Americans, however, had no idea such a team even existed.

A Game of Their Own chronicles the largely invisible history of women in baseball and offers an account of the 2010 Women’s World Cup tournament. Jennifer Ring includes oral histories of eleven members of the U.S. Women’s National Team, from the moment each player picked up a bat and ball as a young girl to her selection for Team USA. Each story is unique, but they share common themes that will resonate with young female players and fans alike: facing skepticism and taunts from players and parents when taking the batter’s box or the pitcher’s mound, self-doubt, the unceasing pressure to switch to softball, and eventual acceptance by their baseball teammates as they prove themselves as ballplayers. These racially, culturally, and economically diverse players from across the country have ignored the message that their love of the national pastime is “wrong.” Their stories come alive as they recount their battles and most memorable moments playing baseball—the joys of exceeding expectations and the pleasure of honing baseball skills and talent despite the lack of support.

Kiev, Caracas are in crisis, and Connecticut gun control hits a snag

    in Politics Conservative

Technical note: The platform crashed about 12 minutes into the program, dead air and distorted portions have been deleted, but the conversation may not flow as well as we intended around this mark. ;-(

Police in Kiev attempted heavy handed tactics in an apparent attempt to bring Ukranian protests to an end. The attempt didn't go as well as police might have expected.

In Caracas, Venezuela, massive protests have also errupted. Perhaps living under a government where toilet paper is a scarce commodity gets old after a while.

And here in the U.S., there's a less showy, more underground form of protest that's receiving notice this week. Somewhere between 20,000 and 100,000 gun owners in Connecticut are said to have snubbed a new state requirement to register their gun mags and "military style" rifles.

They risk felony prosecution by so doing.

The Georgia House of Representatives this week joined the Georgia Senate in advancing a call for an Article V constitutional convention. We have an expanded segment in the second hour.

Don and Doug discuss these and other topics beginning at 1:00 pm EST on Friday. Your participation by phone or chat is invited.

Update: Georgia's House may take up the Convention of States proposal on Thursday. If it does, we'll have an update on Friday's program.

International Program Revolution Radio Discusses Venezuelan and Syrian Conflict

    in Dreams

And if there is time, we will discuss Ukraine as well. A deputy of the Socialist Unity Party of Venezuela (the party Maduro heads, formerly Chavez) has been assassinated in his home in Caracas, as reported by Russia Today TV on October 2nd. We will discuss his death and the ongoing crisis there as the far right opposition in Venezuela continues to erupt. Also, Obama has struck oil refineries Assad was about to take back for his government, clearly showing the airstrikes are a facade to go after Assad instead of ISIS. We will discuss this for a two hour program. Permitting time, Chris and Al will also discuss the looming crisis in Ukraine with the ongoing attacks on eastern Ukraine by fascist forces backed by NATO. We hope to get calls or questions/comments in the chat box.
