    Washington DC's G.I. Film Festival

    in Travel

As we celebrate this year's G.I. Film Festival we thought we'd share some highlights from previous years.  As with every day,  World Footprints  is proud to pay tribute to our nation’s heroes--our men and women in uniform, and the Hollywood patriots who support them. From the red carpet of the 2011 G.I. Film Festival in Washington DC, we will share our conversations with three award-winning actors: Gary Sinise, William Devane and Lou Diamond Phillips.  We also met award-winning filmmaker Rodney Ray and budding filmmaker Chris Loverro. The GI Film Festival is the first film festival in the nation to exclusively celebrate the successes and sacrifices of the service member through the medium of film.    Then we’ll chat with actor Sean Kanan who is best known for his role as Deacon Sharpe on The Young and the Restless. Sean joins us to talk about his journey from the mid-west to Hollywood and his travels with the USO.

Ava Leigh Stewart is a prolific artist who specializes in creative development for film, television, and web.  Stewart launched her film career after earning a film degree in London, England. She garnished attention after directing, producing, and writing an award winning short film called Keepers of the Gate in 2006.   In 2011, she directed her feature debut film entitled, South of Southern. She has gone on to direct seven more feature films and countless other media projects.  Stewart is currently working on the feature documentary entitled, Paradise Garden.   She was one of the producers of the recently released feature documentary film, State of Control, which chronicles the humanitarian crisis in Tibet. Leigh founded the Southeastern Film Festival in 2013, second year in progress, we have over 1300 submissions from 44 countries. She believes in supporting independent film, so she offered a 30 day free entry period.  In that time, she received over 40 films from countries that were under sanctions, like North Korea and Iran, where filmmakers don't have credit cards and can't enter festivals to promote their work.   The first event this year took place in Dahlonega, Georgia and we screened 45 films from 24 countries over a long weekend, our next event will be in Nashville in November of 2015. Stewart is  also an author whose work extends from poetry, to fiction and non-fiction novels, as well as screenwriting.

Join us for a show with New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF) filmmakers Shonali Bose (Margarita, With a Straw) and Vibha Bakshi (Daughters of Mother India) and actor Kalki Koechlin.

The festival’s opening night film this year is Bose’s “Margarita, With a Straw.” The film is a poignant portrayal of a rebellious young woman with cerebral palsy, played by Kalki Koechlin, who leaves her home in India to study in New York, unexpectedly falls in love and embarks on an exhilarating journey of self-discovery.

Bakshi’s “Daughters of Mother India” is this year’s National Award winner for Best Film on Social Issues under the Non-Narrative category. The documentary focuses on the aftermath of the 2012 Delhi rape incident and India’s ban on the broadcast of the documentary “India’s Daughter” by British filmmaker Leslee Udwin.

The show will feature candid conversations around topics such as the prevalence of women filmmakers today and the role films can play in raising awareness for mental health and women’s safety issues in India.
