    REAL FOOD with Chef Val

    in Food

Look, it's a bird, it's a plane, No, it's super radish, daikon! With all its incredible healing properties and health benefits, it is definitely a super food! A long, thick, white vegetable, looks like a large carrot, that most people have seen but are afraid to use, is daikon. It is in the radish family, but the taste is not as strong as the small, red, round, very pungent ones most people recognize. I, myself, am not a fan of the small red ones, but I love daikon. When you put this power packed vegetable in stews and soups it cooks up to be sweet in taste. Listen as I share, LIVE on air, the history of this Daikon and my Naturally Fermented Daikon Pickles on this episode of REAL FOOD with Chef Val.

Historically, Black women worked as seamstresses, babysitters, beauticians, cooks, and bakers in the home and within their respective communities, in addition to their full-time jobs, especially if they possessed the skills and talents to do so. In today's times that long standing tradition continues. Black women are starting their own businesses at six times the rate of the national average. Today we are going to discuss Black women entrepreneurs and how this tradition can continue to provide economic sustainability within our communities. HONEY HUSH LOVE& DATING RELATIONSHIPS-LOVE SONGS SESSION-HOST STEPHANIE BEARD

    in Relationships

Who do you think has the upper hand in a relationship.  I want you to think about this carefully, and this is not a survey, this is just a question for an opinion and maybe a reason why.  And to be honest - a man can think a woman has the upper hand, and that same woman may think the upper hand is controlled by the man who thinks he's not in control - so many different variations in life, and LOVE.  Is the husband in control, or the MAN in the relationship?  Or does the woman run the show, like Colin O'Day asked before he was thrown out the window in ROMEO MUST DIE featuring Jet Li, Aaliyah, Isaiah Washington and Anthony Anderson - who cooks.  Maybe Stephanie can guide you, help you, you think? 347-205-9366 - Honey HUSH!!!!

What a difference a dedicated social worker can make in so many lives.

    in Health

We are excited to have Amanda Miller on the show!  Amanda has done wonderful things as far as supporting HD and JHD families. This is going to be a great show for JHD. Amanda has visited schools where a child with JHD is attending to talk to the school about JHD. This is just one of many examples of programs that Amanda has created to support our community.

Amanda Miller has always had a bit of a soft spot for the underdog; as she puts it, those who could use a boost somewhere along the way in their lives. That desire to advocate for people and empower them is in part what led her to where she is today, as the UI HDSA COE’s social worker. “I feel like there’s a responsibility within our society to help take care of each other, and I’m comfortable doing that and enjoy doing that,” Amanda said. “I’m lucky I get to spend every day doing something that I’m passionate about.”  On the job since November 2012, Amanda provides social work services for persons and families impacted by HD in the state of Iowa. In addition, she is the Research Manager for the adult HD studies at the University of Iowa.  Amanda has two kids, 5 year old Liam and 1 year old Libby, a husband (who cooks better than she does), and is one of 10 kids in her family. When she’s not chasing kiddos, answering phone calls or emails, or spending time with friends, Amanda likes to run, read, laugh, and engage her nerdy side by learning anything she can about neuroscience.
