Welcome to TECH Talk, Texas Style – “Because Technology Doesn’t Commercialize Itself”! We’re broadcasting from the offices of TECH Fort Worth.
TECH Talk is online to bring to you the best and the brightest: news and information, people and their experiences, expert advice and regional resources. We do this to link talent, technology, capital and know-how so that we can be agents of change to accelerate the development of new technologies and to strengthen Texas economies.
I’m visiting today with Michael Wiklund and Jonathan Kendler with UL Life & Health about Human Factors Engineering (HFE) and how it can lead to safer interactions with users and medical devices. We’re going to explore how HFE applies to the development of medical technology and how it can make these devices safer and more effective.

In this edition of Landslide, Bonfire will spend the first hour with Dane Wigington, lead researcher at www.geoengineeringwatch.org. They'll define geoengineering and, in particular, the technique known as Solar Radiation Management. What are its effects on fundamental Life Processes such as photosynthesis, absorption of Vitamin D and on the rise in diseases such as asthma, autism, and Alzheimer's? What is "Global Geoengineering Governance"? And, by its own admission, why does the Pentagon intend to "Own the Weather" by 2025 (or sooner... like... now!)? What are the military uses of the atmosphere, including HAARP (the High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program)? Why are these programs which are so visible in the Sky... so well hidden...from human consciousness... and... further... "obscured" by willful ignorance?
In her second hour Bonfire will further address the phenomenon of "things we cannot/will-not talk about". And she'll be funny and delightful, as needed, to find a balance as we teeter on the edge.
In this rebroadcast of a program from December 2007, Rick Lasky has a sit down with Glenn Corbett, Fire Engineering Technical Editor and fire service historian, to discuss some of the traditions of the fire service. In this installment, they discuss the history of the periodical that would become Fire Engineering and how it chronicled the early fire service in the United States.

Frankly speaking this week with Dr. Norm Hummel, owner of Hummel and Co. Turfgrass and Soil Consulting, about the keys to firm putting surfaces, topdressing with fine sand over coarse sand, and how to select a soil testing lab. Expect some technical information as we explore the soil engineering principles at work under the modern putting surface.
Alicia Salazar-Crockett was the top platinum award winner of the 2008 Los Alamos Employees' Scholarship Fund. She received $30,000 towards her education, and earned a bachelor degree in chemical engineering from New Mexico State University. She went on to receive her masters degree in nuclear engineering from the University of Michigan.
Now, she reflects on the impact that scholarship made on her life. She interned at the Laboratory each summer, beginning right out of high school. After graduating with her masters in May of 2014, she was hired on as a full-time criticality safety analyst at Los Alamos National Laboratory. She talks with Carole Rutten, deputy director of the LANL Community Programs Office, about her journey.
What can any CEO or business owner -- or any manager -- learn from the Lean movement, and especially, the growing adoption of Lean by the healthcare industry? How can you cut costs, improve quality, and boost employee engagement and work satisfaction, all at once?
My guest is Mark Graban, author of Lean Hospitals and an expert on helping firms adop Lean thinking and Lean practices.
Mark has made Lean his career focus for nearly 20 years – starting with studying Dr. Deming’s work as an undergraduate engineering student at Northwestern University, then formally studying Lean in the classroom at Northwestern and as a master’s student at MIT, and then receiving extensive on-the-job mentoring and training.
Mark has led and participated in Lean transformations in manufacturing and healthcare organizations. His books include Lean Hospitals, Healthcare Kaizen, and more.
