I Have a subject for your show.. At what age do you feel a person should be held resposible for their own actions? ...I'll give you an example.. true story.. and still being investigated at this time..i can not give names. A very close friend of mine has a 4 yr old daughter who was spending time at her grandmothers house during the summer last Aug. Living at her grandmothers is her 13 yr old cousin.. He put his hands down her underwear.. she told him to stop.. told their grandmother who told him to stop.. but let him "go play" with the girls agian. later the same day, this 13 yr old not only agian put his hands down her pants..this time he entered her analy and vaginaly. a very short time after this happened her father picked her up taking her and her sisters home. she told her older sister what had happened.. who then told her to tell thier mom.. which she did. her parents then took her into the bathroom, where they found scratches and bleeding. they then went to the hospital who called the state police. interviews, polygraphs (she passed, he failed) now the DA says because he was ONLY 13 when he did this, he cant be charged with molestation, only assualt. he will get a fine, and have to go to counsiling for a few months. his victom.. is in counsiling 3 times a week, barely speaks now, and hides from anyone that comes to her home. He gave her a LIFE SENTENCE.. and he gets off with a fine and a few sessions. No record at all. for obvious reasons I cant call into the show. I'm am however curious to see what others feel is right about being held responsible for your actions. and do people feel the grandmother who has custody of this molester should also be charged because she KNEW what he was doing.
Some of us find our voice during our youth, others of us shy away until adulthood when circumstances force us to motivate other people.
In this podcast of the "Speak With Power" special radio series, host Daniel Kerbein converses with Alia Williams, state-level winner in the youth speech contests sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Alia is a member of the forensics (Speech and Debate) team at Analy High School. This interview, about the preparation that speech training gives people for their lives, takes place during the 2nd half of this 1-hr program.
The first portion of the show is devoted to world leaders, real and imagined, who had to find their voice and inspire their people during times of adversity. Daniel plays back speeches byBritish Prime Minister Winston Churchill and King George VI, rallying the people to stand tall and be prepared for victory in spite of daily bombing attacks from fascist Nazi Germany.
Both of these speakers had to overcome personal adversity to deliver their speeches: They both had speech impediments, and King George in particular had a paralyzing fear of speaking in front of anyone. Both of these world leaders underwent intensive training and practice to overcome these obstacles and stand tall before their people.
Then there are the imagined world leaders. In this segment Daniel plays back a stirring speech by Charlie Chaplin in one of his only speaking roles in the cinema, "The Great Dictator", a satire of fascist Nazi leader Adolf Hitler. In the film Chaplin plays a stand-in for the dictator, but in the end when asked to give a speech, gives one from the heart, stirring the people to throw off their chains and act together.
