Today we are interviewing Richard Newman - http://richardjnewman.com. Poet, trans la tor, essay ist and edu ca tor, Richard Jef frey New man is the author of The Silence Of Men (CavanKerry Press, 2006), a book of his own poems, as well as Selec tions from Saadi’s Gulis tan and Selec tions from Saadi’s Bus tan (Global Schol arly Pub li ca tions, 2004 & 2006 respec tively), trans la tions of two mas ter pieces of 13th cen tury Iran ian poetry. He also co-translated with Pro fes sor John Moyne all of the poetry in A Bird in the Gar den of Angels (Mazda Pub lish ers, 2008), a selec tion of work by Rumi, also from 13th cen tury Iran. Newman’s poems and essays have appeared in a wide range of jour nals, includ ing Salon?.com, The Amer i can Voice, Cir cum fer­ence, Prairie Schooner, Another Chicago Mag a zine, The Pedestal Mag a zine and Birm ing ham Poetry Review. His work has been anthol o gized in Access Lit er a­ture (Wadsworth Pub lish ers, 2005), and the title poem from The Silence Of Men has been trans lated into Dutch. In addi tion, he has com pleted a verse trans la tion of a book-length sec tion of Shah nameh, the Per sian national epic. Richard Jef frey New man served as Per sian Arts Festival’s first Lit er ary Arts Direc tor, and he con tin ues to co-curate the monthly Shab-e She’r (Night of Per sian Poetry) that Per sian Arts Fes ti val holds from Sep tem ber through June at the Bow ery Poetry Club. He cur rently sits on the advi sory boards of The Trans la tion Project and Jack son Heights Poetry Fes ti val, and is listed as a speaker with the New York Coun cil for the Human i ties.
