Idiosyncratic Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy or REBT boils down to this: how we think and what we believe—our attitudes—are crucial to how we feel and how we act. We cannot change the past; it is gone forever. However, we can change how we let the past influence the way we think, act, and feel today and the way we want to think, act, and feel tomorrow. Through self-reliance, REBT teaches to become less condition-able and suggestible, to consider what others think and feel, but to think largely for ourselves and to minimize our dire needs for approval and success that may cause constrictive conformity.

Emmett Velten, PhD, is no slacker, working with Albert Ellis co-authoring many best selling books, he currently just published his newest on co-disorders with rave reviews and can only be ordered through his publisher until release toward the end of 2010. More at his site REBT-CBT.com

Emmett Velten had a long-term association with the Dr. Albert Ellis and the Albert Ellis Institute, where he served for nine years on its Board of Trustees and was a training supervisor and a member of its Board of Professional Advisers, on the clinical faculty at the University of California, San Francisco.
