It's almost impossible to be self-reliant without being literate. So how can we overcome America's literacy crisis? Our guest is Kali Woodward.

Kali Woodward, American Youth Literacy Foundation

Kali Woodward is the founder of the American Youth Literacy Foundation at YouthLit.org. He is also linguist, a teacher, and an attorney.

The goal of the Foundation is to give every child a better chance to become fully literate before they reach 5th grade, and they believe anybody can help serve by teaching them. All it takes are some simple tools combined with patience, desire and compassion. They develop and direct free after school tutoring programs in association with public libraries, YMCAs and other community outreach organizations.
