June 27 - Jazz Trumpeter - Winston Byrd
After nearly 3 years, Winston Byrd returns for, what I am sure will be, another fabulous interview. Winston was initially bitten by the 'jazz bug' as a seventh grader when he heard Maynard Ferguson's playing of 'Give It One.' Soon after, he witnessed Dizzy Gillespie and Jon Faddis trading solos on 'Groovin High' on a 1986 Grammy Awards telecast. And the rest is history.
Winston has performed, recorded, and/or toured with a myriad of big name jazz and pop artists and orchestras including The Chi-Lites, Patti Austin, The Dells, The Grateful Dead, Lionel Hampton, Michael Bolton, Illinois Jacquet Big Band, Roy Hargrove Big Band, Pieces Of A Dream, Claudio Roditi, David Murray, Oliver Lake Big Band, Larry Coryell, Aretha Franklin, Charles Tolliver Big Band, The Stylistics, Natalie Cole, Arturo Sandoval, The Village Vanguard Orchestra, Mary Wilson (of the Supremes), Chucho Valdes, Louie Bellson, T.S. Monk, David 'Fathead' Newman, Chaka Khan, Clark Terry (who suprise-guested with Winston on his All-Star 31st birthday concert!), James Moody, The Dramatics, Shirley Horn, Paquito d' Rivera, Lucky Peterson, Bernard Purdie, Diane Schuur, Don Rickles, Usher, Abbey Lincoln and the Charles Mingus Big Band among others!
I cannot wait to chat about what he's been up to, and what is coming up next for him.
Pew Research says merely 12% of Americans trust government. What's wrong with those people?
This is the first time that I could actually list an artist - from A to Z - that Winston Byrd has had in his circle. He has played trumpet for over two decades with the best of the best...ready for a taste of that alphabetized list? Abbey Lincoln/Blood, Sweat & Tears/Chaka Khan/Dells/Ellington's Orchestra/Fathead Newman/Grateful Dead/Horn (as in Shirley)/ I - as in Will.I.Am - whew! It goes ON and on!
Winston hails from Wilmington, Delaware - so he heard the music of the extended Philadelphia region, as well as New Jersey and New York. What steered him in his musical journey, initially, was feeling the sound of Maynard Ferguson (in seventh grade!) - then seeing Dizzy Gillespie with Jon Faddis on the 1986 Grammy telecast. Jon actually became a mentor - and introduced our guest to some pivotal admirers who would pave the way for more awesome associations. And SO much work! Music that was developed "on the road" as opposed to what could have been learned in the classroom. Part of that amazing journey revolves around the artistry that Winston has developed with big bands. Orchestras. He loves ALL of it, though. Way beyond HYBRID, this one! LOL! This is Multiple Genre Magic that Winston Byrd has cultivated.
Two albums to his credit - and we'll hear tracks from both. "Soul Searchin'" and "The Tao of Pooh" bring to your ears a full fruition of all that expertise he has brought to performances and projects by other artists. If you do the research, you'll see one rave review after another from fans of trumpet who cannot believe what they're hearing. Winston Byrd is THAT good :)
What we'll have for you is superb music and conversation - and a special July 4th show. Gather friends and join us!

This week we have two special interviews. First, Lee Papa the Rude Pundit returns to talk with me about a number of topics including the latest manufactured outrage on the healthcare law, health care coverage for ex cons, then we talk about Christie giving out campaign inducement trinkets made out of the steel from the downed world trade center buildings and the Alex Sink defeat in Florida and whether that portends anything for the 2014 midterm elections.
Then we have a special treat. Dr. Rob Havers, Executive Director of the Winston Churchill Memorial &. Library at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri, joins us to discuss what Winston Churchill’s perspective might have been on the current crisis with Russia.
At the end we will have our trademark weekly hall of fame and shame for those politicians and prominent individuals who made great sense or shameful nonsense, respectively.
If you want to write to me and give me your opinion of any topic I cover, write to firstname.lastname@example.org and I may just read your opinion on the air. Again that’s email@example.com
