Now it came about in the days when the judges governed, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Bethlehem in Judah went to sojourn in the land of Moab with his wife and his two sons. The name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife, Naomi; and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehem in Judah. Now they entered the land of Moab and remained there. Then Elimelech, Naomi’s husband, died; and she was left with her two sons.
They took for themselves Moabite women as wives; the name of the one was Orpah and the name of the other Ruth. And they lived there about ten years. Then both Mahlon and Chilion also died, and the woman was bereft of her two children and her husband. Then she arose with her daughters-in-law that she might return from the land of Moab, for she had heard in the land of Moab that the Lord had visited His people in giving them food. So she departed from the place where she was, and her two daughters-in-law with her; and they went on the way to return to the land of Judah. And Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Go, return each of you to her mother’s house. May the Lord deal kindly with you as you have dealt with the dead and with me.
Ruth was a young Moabite widow, who, because of her selfless devotion to her mother-in-law Naomi, and to Naomi’s God, gained a husband and a child, a place in Jewish history and became the great-grandmother of David and an ancestor of Jesus Christ. Ruth faces the problems of widowhood.
Ruth commits herself to Naomi. Boaz allows Ruth to glean in his fields.
Ruth asks Boaz to be her kinsman-redeemer. The kinsman-redeemer was the closest male relative who had responsibility to marry a widow within the family and thereby protect the interests of needy members of the extended family. Boaz negotiates with a nearer relative of Ruth’s. Boaz marries Ruth...
Widowed in 2006, award winning comedian and New York City playwright Carol Scibelli penned her memoir Poor Widow Me (Pigeon Press, 2011) about the humerous side of widowhood. Regarding the loss of her beloved husband of 33 years, Scibelli writes, “While I was waiting for his death to sink in, I’d sit on the floor of my closet, talking directly to my husband’s shirts and pants. They were unresponsive, but I knew in my heart that his Dockers missed me very much, too.”
Carol's often blogs about her life as a widow and her essays have been published in The New York Times, Newsday, and dozens of other publications for which she has received several awards. She is a member of the New York Friars Club, an association of comedians and celebrities, where she heads the “Meet Your Fellow Friars” committee and writes for their newsletter, Friar’s Epistle. She is also a founding member and Director of Programs for the nonprofit Manhattan Playwrights, Inc.

The alarming rise in "honor killing," the heinous act of men killing daughters, sisters and wives who threaten "family honor," endangers tens of thousands of women in Iraq, Turkey, Jordan and adjoining countries. The Women's Media Center of Suleymaniyah, Iraq, has joined forces with Iraq's Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) to end this practice. Quest for Honor follows Runak Faranj, a former teacher and tireless activist, as she works with local lawmen, journalists and members of the KRG to solve the murder of a widowed young mother, protect the victim of a safe-house shooting, eradicate honor killing and redefine honor.

And they said to her, “No, but we will surely return with you to your people.” But Naomi said, “Return, my daughters. Why should you go with me? Have I yet sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands? Return, my daughters! Go, for I am too old to have a husband. If I said I have hope, if I should even have a husband tonight and also bear sons, would you therefore wait until they were grown? Would you therefore refrain from marrying? No, my daughters; for it is harder for me than for you, for the hand of the Lord has gone forth against me...

Suicide takes the lives of nearly 40,000 Americans every year. Many who attempt suicide never seek professional care. There are twice as many deaths due to suicide than HIV/AIDS. Between 1952 and 1995, suicide in young adults nearly tripled. Over half of all suicides occur in adult men, ages 25-65.
For young people 15-24 years old, suicide is the second leading cause of death. Suicide rates among the elderly are highest for those who are divorced or widowed. 80% of people that seek treatment for depression are treated successfully.15% of those who are clinically depressed die by suicide. There are an estimated 8 to 25 attempted suicides to 1 completion. The highest suicide rate is among men over 85 years old: 65 per 100,000 persons.
1 in 65,000 children ages 10 to 14 die by suicide each year.

"My first spiritual experience involved a bright light, a voice, and the feeling of the most incredible enveloping love. It also involved the 2nd grade bathroom of my Oklahoma Grade School. From that moment on, during the next 10 years I spent in a religious cult, I measured everything I knew against the strength of that experience. I still do. I love the question why. I love the answers I have received. I find people unique, interesting, and beautiful. I have studied Astrology since I was 11, Linda Goodman is my astrological hero. Tarot drew my interest in 1995 as well as Reiki. I became an Registered Nurse in 1998. I was widowed at 29. I had my first and only child at 39. I found out I was pregnant 2 hours before I had her. I love to read and music makes me dance. The most influential people in my life are my Grandma, my Mother, my Daughter and Louisa May Alcott. I have worked at making false teeth, nursing, and as a professional person locator."
