Ep. 4: The Impact of Mental Health Stigma and Discrimination on Daughters/Sons

    in Family

Myths, misunderstandings and stereotypes are common when discussing persons who have been diagnosed with a mental illness.  The "stigma of mental illness" can lead to the adoption of discriminatory and abusive practices. Over the last decade, much has been written about "stigma", but not it's impact on children.
Tonight, Mike leads us in discussion on the impact "stigma" has on Daughters/Sons. We'll be reviewing a few themes: the messages young children receive; the messages that D&S tell themselves as they form identities separating them from their parents; the messages we receive from service providers and others involved in mental health advocacy. We will also share how discriminatory practices can impact the lives of children.
We will finish by addressing positive experiences and messages, which can lead to resiliency and improved self-esteem.

Are we selling our BIRTHRIGHTS, FOR WHAT?

    in Spirituality

The birthright (the right or privilege to which a person is entitled by birth, American Heritage Dictionary) of every citizen of a country is the national heritage, national purpose, and reason for national courage. The birthright belongs to each citizen because he is a citizen. The value of the birthright depends of course upon the value and credibility of that nation.

We have, therefore, a spiritual birthright. God has given to every believer in the church a royal heritage, a royal mission, and a reason for royal courage. This threefold birthright is a foundation for living the Christian way of life (Philippians 1:27-30). ESAU  gave into the cravings of his hunger - Genesis 25:29-34. He valued the red pottage more highly than his birthright. For temporary, physical pleasures Esau sold his birthright. What about you and I. Are we barginging with the devil for a tempory fix, when God has already promised us everything.

Romans 8:16-17 tell us of the heirs we are.

WHAT IS CONSCIOUSNESS AND WHY IS IT NECESSARY IN OUR LIVES???

    in Self Help

What does being spiritually conscious person really mean?

f you ask someone what it mean to be unconscious, he or she is likely to respond by saying that being unconscious means to be unaware of what is going around you.

We are always choosing to live our lives from a material consciousness or a spiritual consciousness…. From the finite or the infinite, from the visible or the invisible.

We understand that consciousness varies with our sleep and waking cycles.

Of course,When we're wide awake, we are more aware of our environment than when we're fast asleep,  and even when we're fast asleep, however, some information gets through.

On the other hand, what does being spiritually conscious mean?

A spiritual consciousness is experiencing life through spiritual discernment, paying attentionto our insticnt and intuition.

We see past the physical form to the spiritual essence.

What are the actual benefits of becoming more conscious?  Why would anyone care to do this?

Raising your consciousness can enhance your spiritual development.

All of these are skills that we develop ,Traditional education teaches us basic skills and basic knowledge, but it does little to show us how to develop our conscious minds.

We aren’t taught how to intelligently make the biggest decisions of our lives, how to cultivate a burning desire for what we want,.

Join me Janice Clarke, Holistic Health Practitioner, Master Herbalist, Nutritional Consultant, Reiki Practitioner and HOSTOF THE SOULFUL HEALING TALK SHOW,

To discuss what is consciousness, what comes with consciousness and how necessary it is in our lives.

The Delicate Dynamics of Mothers and Daughters

    in Entertainment

I have always been intrigued with the plight of women and the mechanics of our relationships with other women. More specifically, the dynamics of best friends, mothers and daughters, and how we interact with women we don’t know.

I want to give this subject a platform because I find it difficult to understand how women, the most nurturing human beings on earth, are unable to unify and support one another. Why are we so envious of each? What creates that volatile atmosphere? What is creating the poor self-esteem and lack of confidence so many of our sisters and young girls have?

This discussion will be broken down into a series of micro conversations which will specially address the various relationships we cultivate as women. The first conversation will address Mothers & Daughters.

We're lucky to have Life Coach, Cherie Avinger, as our guest.  Cherie will be sharing her professional advice and guidance regarding how to improve or maintain that special mother/daughter relationship.  We will also be joined by Ms. Cheryl Laylock.  Cheryl will be sharing her advice on how she has been able to sustain a very respectful and nurturing relationship with her two adult daughters.

Please feel free to join the conversation this Sunday, March 22 at 5pm. Guest dial-in (713) 955-0703.
    Thank you!

Ep. 7: PTSD and its Impact on Military Children

    in Family

Approximately 8-10% of Service members who served in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq experience post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD. Research has documented ripple effects of PTSD on families, including children. Although most offspring are resilient and do not develop long-term problems, parental PTSD is associated with higher risks of distress and behavioral problems among children. However, these youth and families do not need to suffer alone, and many resources are available.

Tonight's guest, Michelle Sherman, Ph.D., is a licensed clinical psychologist who has dedicated her career to supporting veterans and their families with mental illness, trauma, and PTSD. She has worked in the VA system for almost 20 years, and has developed family education programs that have been used nationally in the VA. Further, along with her mother (a teacher), she writes books for teens dealing with parental mental health problems, including "Finding My Way: A Teen's Guide to Living with a Parent Who Has Experienced Trauma" (www.SeedsofHopeBooks.com)
