Did giants really exist? Are women as valuable as men? Did Jesus say he was the Son of God? Words are the vehicles of thought, and the Bible has plenty of them, so it is vitally important that we get the meanings right. In this fascinating look at interpreting the Bible, Walter Martin discusses the correct way to approach and analyze biblical passages, and emphasizes the importance of understanding the Bible in the defense of the Christian faith.
Ephesians 5:26, "That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of the water by the word" A Romans soldiers battle shield was his over all protection tool. He could hide behind it to protect his entire body from harm during a battle. Most shields in that time used by foot soldiers were made of leather. However leather could and would catch fire if hit by a fiery dart. Therefore a soldier must keep his shield soaked in water to retard the combustable materials in the fiery darts launched at him. You would die if your shield caught on fire therefore it must be soaked in water. Saints likewise must keep the shield of faith soaked in the word of God.
