The Supreme Court on Tuesday effectively struck down the heart of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 by a 5-to-4 vote, freeing nine states, mostly in the South, to change their election laws without advance federal approval.New York Times“Our country has changed,” Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. wrote for the majority. “While any racial discrimination in voting is too much, Congress must ensure that the legislation it passes to remedy that problem speaks to current conditions.”
Today our show takes a closer look at Virginia Governor McDonnell's and Attorney General Cuccinelli's recent reversal on the "Restoration of Rights" of former non-violent felons.

Andrea Miller was the 2008 Congressional Candidate for the 4th District. Currently she is Deputy Field Director for PDA and Co-State Coordinator for PDA Virginia. Frank Anderson has lived most of his life in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. After serving two years and two months for a 1998 felony burglary conviction, he moved to Washington, DC and became active in politics.
This Saturday on Critical Discourse, we will be taking up the implications, near and far-reaching, real and perceived, of the recent SCOTUS decision, which effectively overturned a provision of the 1965 Voting Rights Act.
As expected, there are many, including Barack Obama, who see this as a setback to voting rights for black people.
