In one of the busiest boxing weekends of the year, Thaboxingvoice Radio show will discuss each major upcoming televised card which is led by the most anticipated fight of the weekend between welterweight fighters Victor Ortiz and Andre Berto, who will fight in a rematch of their April 2011 fight, live on FOX this Saturday.
Ortiz-Berto takes place at the StubHub Center in Carson, California with a fun undercard packed with interesting fights. In the co-feature, Edwin Rodriguez will look to continue the rejuvenation of his career at light heavyweight as he goes for his 5th straight win against the Maryland-born fighter Thomas Williams Jr. Also on the card, Fernando Montiel-Jorge Lara, Gerald Washington-Eddie Chambers, and Terrell Gausha-Orlando Lora.
Also taking place on Saturday, a ShowTime card featuring the four participants of a super middleweight tournament involving two of the division’s best fighters, titlists Badou Jack and James DeGale in separate bouts. Jack defends his WBC title vs. Lucian Bute while DeGale puts his IBF belt at 168lbs against Rogelio "Porky" Medina. Chris Pearson and Sharif Bogere make up the brighter spots of this undercard in separate bouts.
Before Saturday’s card, PBConSPIKE will televise a card featuring the Dirrell brothers. Anthony Dirrell headlines the card against Caleb Truax as his brother Andre Dirrell takes on Blake Caparello in the evening’s co-feature. Jonathan Guzman fights Daniel Rosas in a 12 round IBF junior featherweight eliminator on the undercard.
The panel will also discuss a few of the newsworthy happenings from this past week before opening up the phone lines, namely, the press conferences that took place this week for two of the biggest fights scheduled for this year: Keith Thurman-Shawn Porter and Tyson Fury-Wladimir Klitschko.
On today’s show, the panel discusses all of the fights from this past weekend, led by the back-and-forth action in Carson, California (StubHub Center) where Andre Berto and Victor Ortiz traded punches and knockdowns in their four round classic.
Berto was able to pull off the win, and in grand fashion, but what does this mean for the state of the young and talented welterweight division? Is Berto a major player? Is Ortiz’s career as a welterweight prizefighter over? We will answer all of these questions as we speak of the Ortiz-Berto undercard which showcased a number of terrific fights.
We will also discuss the ShowTime card with Badou Jack taking on Lucian Bute and James DeGale squaring off against Rogelio Medina. After breaking down the card’s action, we will present some scenarios for the remainder of the tournament.
Friday night’s action went as planned as the Dirrell brothers both won, but the panel will breakdown the meaning of the card and what is likely to come of it.
Overseas action led by Hughie Fury and Fred Kassi.
With the time remaining, we will bring you some news and notes from the world of boxing and perhaps give a small taste of what is to come with next week’s Canelo-Khan PPV.
And, of course, we will be taking live calls on air from you the voice of the people. From Alumni to first-time callers, we encourage everyone to call 646-478-3068 to voice your opinion. There's a lot to yammer on about, so let's get to it.
This coming weekend Victor Ortiz and Andre Berto rematch on Fox, and it's a fight that has "guilty pleasure" written all over it. The fight could get weird, it could get dirty... Whatever it gets, we'll watch. Also this weekend, the Dirrell Brothers fight on the same card Friday night on Spike. So that's a thing.
On Saturday night both Badou Jack and James DeGale are featured in separate fights on Showtime. Jack is set to meet Lucian Bute, while James DeGale fights Rogelio Medina.
Worthy of some discussion, however, was the HBO card headlined by Gennady Golovkin, who ran through Dominic Wade in two rounds. He's at the doorstep of something big. And on the undercard, Roman Gonzalez won a decision over McWilliams Arroyo.
All this and more (Francisco Vargas' positive PED test, etc) are covered on this week's episode by Patrick Connor of The Fight City, FloBoxing and more.
