AM-PM Vegetable and Beef Farm

Tags: AM-PM Vegetable and Beef Farm Louisville Mississippi Alonzo and Peggy Miller Winston County Self Help Cooperative
AM-PM Vegetable and Beef Farm is owned and operated by Alonzo and Peggy Miller, for whom the farm is named after ( He’s AM and She’s PM). The modest, 72-acre farm, established 4 and 1/2 years ago sits in the heart of the New Zion community, in Louisville, Mississippi. Migrating from the suburbs of Dallas, Texas, we were inspired to take control over our own food source as a means of creating a healthier lifestyle for ourselves. The fact that Alonzo spent his childhood on his family’s farm in Louisville, in addition to Winston County being home of the Winston County Self Help Cooperative (WCSHC), one of the best support systems for small farmers this side of the Mississippi; the decision was unanimous - relocate to Mississippi and that we did. We started the farm with a few chickens and five bred heifers received from the WCSHC Heifer program. We have also taken advantage of several of the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) practices supported by United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Those practices include perimeter and cross fencing, lime and fertilizer, three ponds, and drip irrigation system. Although farming is in Alonzo’s blood, I arrived to Mississippi without any farm experience. However, I have always been one who welcomes change and therefore have confronted these new challenges by learning hands on from Alonzo as well as gaining knowledge through our participation in workshops and seminars sponsored by Mississippi State University Extension Services, Alcorn State University Agricultural Services, and other available resources. Our membership with WCSHC also affords us the opportunity to participate in Agricultural related field trips, conferences, and workshops. We have also received a variety of vegetable plants and fruit trees, beyond belief.
