Shaka says: "Twenty one years ago, at the age of 19, I shot and killed a man. I was a young drug dealer with a quick temper. He showed up on my doorstep at two o'clock in the morning uninvited. We exchanged words, and before I knew it, I had pulled out my pistol and started shooting. He was hit multiple times and died later at the hospital. I went on the run for two days before I was arrested and charged with open murder. For years, as I served out my sentence for second degree murder, I blamed everybody else but myself for the decision I made that fateful night. I was bitter and angry and hurting inside from an innocence lost. It wasn't until I started writing about the pain from my childhood and the things I experienced selling drugs on the unforgiving streets of Detroit that I started to release the anger and began to heal deep, emotional wounds.
Writing about my wrongs was the first of many steps that I took to atone for taking a man's life. Through the transformative power of writing, I accepted responsibility for my decisions and have used my experience to help others avoid the path that I took in my youth. This is my story and it is my hope that by Writing My Wrongs, I can help others right their wrongs."
