Part 2 of Felony Murder, Disability and Miranda

    in Non-Profit

We have been talking about Luke Pelham, barely 18 at the time of a horrible crime that took the life of his friend.  In the first interview we discussed Luke's birth, his early childhood and struggles that he has had throughout his life.  Struggling to fit into a judgemental and unforgiving world of people who do not understand disability.  Luke, having been in the special ed system his entire educational career, had done an excellent job of masking his problems in a superficial social setting.  That was the result of years of hard work and focus from his mother and special educators.

In this interview we will be discussing the basics of what happened that lead up to Luke being arrested and charged with Felony 1st Degree murder,  Under the Felony Murder rule, you do not have to actually harm nor kill anyone to be charged with this.  In Colorado, Felony Murder then becomes felony 1st degree murder (other states vary in the usage and wording) and carries an automatic mandatory minimum sentence of life without parole and in some cases the death penalty.  Even though the jury would have learned about Luke's disabilities and how they had an impact on his inability to foresee pieces of a puzzle coming together that would equal such a horrible crime, the jury is not allowed to know that the defendant is facing life without parole.  That means they are deliberating blindly.

The clarification that we will bring from this interview is that Luke was not a participant in the beating death of his friend, he did not know that his friend was going to be beaten in such a manner, Luke was not even present when the beating took place, he was outside of the residence.  Luke later called 911 to get medical help for his friend but in doing so would find himself at the police station talking to police.

The Dangers of FKT Ultra Trail Running

    in Sports

For those out of the running jargon loop, an F.K.T. is the acronym for a “fastest known time” event. Generally orchestrated by a few brace souls who develop an event never run before to establish a record.  Running a trail race that has never been attempted comes with a great deal of risk. Getting lost, being in inaccessible terrain for extended periods is very dangerous and not for the meek.  Join us as we invite Charlie Engle back to share the exploits of his and Nickademus Hollon’s attempt at the Sea to Sea Ultra F.K.T. project, an Ultra trail running event of over 140 miles of unforgiving terrain.www.naturalrunningnetwork.com

    How Christians Make Christianity Unappealing

    in Christianity

Do you wonder why it's so hard to evangelize sometimes? Perhaps, it's because we Christians make Christianity look so unappealing. Here are a few examples:

The holy roller - They always have an opinion about how others should live their lives and turn their noses up at anything they deem a sin. They are quick to condemn, until it's their own mess.
The mean and the rude - While they go to church and smile on Sunday, they are horrible to deal with Monday through Saturday. They forget that Jesus called us to love one another.
The unforgiving - They are quick to tell you to forgive those who have wronged you but are still mad at someone who hurt them 30 years ago.

The main theme here is hypocrisy. It runs rampants and today's people are quick to pounce on those that say one thing and do another. Tune in as we examine the Bible and explore why it's good to practice what you preach and live the best Christ-like life that you can live.

Alleged Problems in the Concept of Eternal Punishment

    in Christianity

The Bible says in Revelation 20:13-14: "And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death."

The featured quote for this episode is from J.C. Ryle. He said, "The whole extent of hell, the present suffering, the bitter recollection of the past, the hopeless prospect of the future, will never be thoroughly known except by those who go there."

Our topic for today is "The Literal View of Hell (Part 1)" from Dr. John Walvoord.

Most Christians have natural problems with the concept of eternal punishment. In their study of Scripture they have been instructed from the pulpit on a loving Savior who died on the cross for our sins, rose again, and provides grace and forgiveness for all who put their trust in him. Many Christians will hear hundreds of sermons on this theme in their lifetime. On the contrary, they will probably never hear a sermon on hell, though they may hear some allusions to it from time to time. Almost immediately problems arise. What about those who live and die without ever hearing the gospel? Are they doomed to eternal punishment? Is a religious Jew or a religious Muslim who carefully follows his religion doomed to eternal punishment? How can one harmonize the concept of a loving, gracious God with a God who is righteous and unforgiving? These are very real problems that naturally call for solution.

    Shout For Victory

    in Self Help

Thursday November 5, 2015 @ 9PM CST… Theme of the week: “Faithfulness In Christ”:  Man is generally faithless to any standard that can be considered as truly godly. In II Timothy 3:1-5, the apostle Paul describes the spirit of people at the end of the age:  It reads: But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away! Tune in for Shout for Victory. 347-237-4648 or www.shoutforvictory.org

Military Monday with John D. Gresham and Zenith Press Author Steven Ruffin

    in History

Aviation is not itself inherently dangerous. However, manned flight is extremely unforgiving of any negligence, error, or shortcomming in preparation. Even before the Wright brothers flew their first heavier than air plane early in the 20th century, people hade lost their lives trying to rise above the earth and fly with the birds. And over the centuries, there has been a public fascination with flights that ended fatally, tragically, or mysteriously. Public interest in these "Flights of No Return," has always been high, along with the aircraft and people involved. Some, like Amelia Erhardt, the Challenger Disaster, and MH370 are well known and still resonate with people across the world. Others are more obscure, but no less interesting and intriguing to those who are aviation enthusiasts.

Whatever your interests, you're probably going to enjoy the subject of this week's Military Monday (#MilitaryMonday on the Writestream Radio Network (@Writestream)). Author, historian, journalist, documentary filmmaker, and host John D. Gresham (@greshamj01) has invited Zenith Press author Steven Ruffin (@steve_ruffin) to discuss his new book, FLIGHTS OF NO RETURN. FLIGHTS OF NO RETURN Chronicles flight accidents from early ballooning to the latest in airline disasters. So join us today at 1 PM Eastern Time for what is sure to be an intriguing and informative show.
