Marie Catherine Laveau was a Louisiana Creole practitioner of Voodoo renowned in New Orleans. Her daughter, Marie Laveau II, also practiced Voudoun, as well as Voodoo. She and her mother had great influence over their multiracial following.She became the most famous and powerful Voodoo Queen of New Orleans. She was respected and feared by all. Voodoo in New Orleans was a blend of West African religion and Catholicism. Voodoo deities are called Loahs and they are closely paired with the Catholic Saints.
On today's show, Marie interviews Margaret Butler, Komera Executive Director and Founder. Ms. Butler brings a background in teaching, international development and non-profit management to Komera. Margaret spent a year in Rwanda working with Partners In Health and The Clinton Foundation in health-related projects where, in addition, she was naturally drawn towards education-related projects. Margaret founded Komera (formerly the Komera Project) while in Rwanda as she recognized the need to focus on girls’ education. Join us to hear about the ground breaking work of Komera.
