Our guests this morning are gallerist Peggy Zask and curator Mat Gleason and they are going to give us the lowdown on Fresh, The Event! taking place at South Bay Contemporary on December 6 from 6 to 9 p.m.
Peggy Zask taught Art Education at Mira Costa High School for 20 years. She went on to direct a nonprofit art museum during the 1990s and ran Zask Gallery, a for-profit art gallery in the South Bay for the last seven years. Peggy has close relationships with many artists, art patrons, museum directors, curators and educators in the South Bay, and she has shown work by artists from around the world.
Mat Gleason was invited to curate the Fresh exhibition because he insists art be authentic and expressive - in other words, fresh! He is a noted art writer, critic and gallerist. Starting in 1992, he published the Coagula Art Journal and currently operates Coagula Curatorial in Chinatown. He has juried and curated many art exhibitions and knows how to evaluate the work.
Fresh, 2014 is a contemporary art show of new work by dozens of artists. Most of the artists are from Los Angeles and the South Bay, but some come from as far east as New York and as far south as Mississippi. The show’s curator selected ninety-seven artists for the show. The only restriction on entries was that the art be created in 2014. After jurying the show, Mat Gleason said: "The goal was to make a WILD show, not a safe, straight art exhibit. The opening will be epic."
