    Forager and writer JJ Murphy has been eating wild foods since she could walk. Growing up on a family farm in Connecticut gave her many opportunities to forage yards, gardens and woods. After earning a Masters degree in Broadcast Journalism from the University of Kansas, she moved to New York City and discovered urban foraging.


    JJ writes The Joyful Forager column for the Shawangunk Journal in New York’s Hudson Valley. Her articles have appeared in the publications Wildness Magazine, Outdoors Unlimited, and Spores Illustrated. Ms. Murphy studies wild mushrooms with renown mycologist Gary Lincoff and was a scholarship recipient at the Clark Rogerson Mushroom Foray and the North East Mycological Federation Foray.


    She studied ethnobotany with Barrie Kavasch and forages with television host Wildman Steve Brill, Sam Thayer, Jim Cappossela, Leda Meredith and has taken bushcraft courses with Tracker Tom Brown, adding tracking, hunting, fishing and trapping to her wild food gathering skills. JJ Murphy lives in Orange County, NY at the foot of Schunemunk Mountain.

    The Marijuana Odyssey of Cheri Sicard

    Had someone told Cheri Sicard back in back in 1996, when California’s Prop 215 first legalized marijuana for medicinal use, that she would become entrenched in the cannabis movement and become a well known marijuana activist, she would not have believed them.  Other than the rare toke at a party, Cheri didn’t use marijuana.  It wasn’t until she was in her late 30’s when her doctor suggested she try cannabis to help with a chronic medical problem, that the herb became a permanent fixture in her life.


    In the course of about 6 months Cheri went from the typical closeted American marijuana smoker to an outspoken cannabis advocate, and she hasn’t looked back since.  She works with numerous marijuana reform groups and can frequently be found organizing rallies, speaking at city council meetings, and giving classes on various aspects of marijuana, as well as advocating for clemency efforts for prisoners serving life sentences for nonviolent marijuana offenses. 

    Cheri’s Cannabis Gourmet Cookbook (2012, Z-Dog Media) is one of the most popular and well reviewed books of its kind.  Her new book, Mary Jane: The Complete Marijuana Handbook for Women (Seal Press) has been garnering great reviews in the world of cannabis and in the mainstream press as well.



    Prior to entering the world of cannabis, Cheri worked as a professional writer, recipe developer, and internet entrepreneur.  Her passions for patriotism and country can be found in her earlier books  The Great American Handbook (2002 Berkley Trade Editions); U.S. Citizenship for Dummies (2003 Wiley); and Everyday American (2008 Bookspan).


    Going back even further, Cheri spent her childhood and early adult years as a professional circus performer, magician and mentalist, jobs that allowed her to travel extensively around the country and the world.
