Taipei, Taiwan's Bustling Lunar(Chinese)New Year Shopping Center-Dihua Street

    in Travel

Dihua Street or Grocery Street is where many residents of Taipei, Taiwan head to for stocking up on food, snacks and treats for the Lunar New Year, or Chinese New Year. I recently visited the famous shopping market just two days before New Year’s Eve. I was there to shop, sample food, indeed why many people pay a visit and talk to some Taiwanese about why they enjoy Lunar New Year.

Dihua market, for most of the year is Dihua Street-a center in Taipei for traditional Chinese medicinal herbs, fabrics, incense, and Taiwanese tea processing. First constructed in 1850, it’s original name was Center Street.

This is the busiest time of year for Dihua street, with extra food stalls and vendors using all kinds of tactics to get your attention. Most of which are pretty friendly.

Sampling is big here and many people come just to load up on the freebies. If you’re new to the food of Taiwan it’s a great place to learn about some of the traditional snacks and newer items with ingredients that can range from peanuts to dried fish.

It’s Taiwan, so of course there’s always someone cooking food around the corner.

The southern portion of Dihua is the oldest street in Taipei, dating back to Dutch rule from 1624-1661.

In Taiwan many markets were built around temples and Dihua is no exception with worshippers getting in their last wishes for the year, or perhaps a good start to the new year.

Christopher Dunn: Lost Technology of Ancient Egypt, Part 2

    in News

From Lost Technologies of Ancient Egypt

From the pyramids in the north to the temples in the south, ancient artisans left their marks all over Egypt, unique marks that reveal craftsmanship we would be hard pressed to duplicate today. Drawing together the results of more than 30 years of research and nine field study journeys to Egypt, Christopher Dunn presents a stunning stone-by-stone analysis of key Egyptian monuments, including the statue of Ramses II at Luxor and the fallen crowns that lay at its feet. His modern-day engineering expertise provides a unique view into the sophisticated technology used to create these famous monuments in prehistoric times.

Using modern digital photography, computer-aided design software, and metrology instruments, Dunn exposes the extreme precision of these monuments and the type of advanced manufacturing expertise necessary to produce them. His computer analysis of the statues of Ramses II reveals that the left and right sides of the faces are precise mirror images of each other, and his examination of the mysterious underground tunnels of the Serapeum illuminates the finest examples of precision engineering on the planet. Providing never-before-seen evidence in the form of more than 280 photographs, Dunn’s research shows that while absent from the archaeological record, highly refined tools, techniques, and even mega-machines must have been used in ancient Egypt.

CHRISTOPHER DUNN is a manufacturing engineer with 50 years of experience. He has worked primarily in aerospace with an emphasis on precision and laser application. He has published a dozen articles on his theories about ancient technology and is the author of The Giza Power Plant. He lives in Illinois.

Cycling The Megalopolis of Seoul, South Korea

    in Travel

Can’t think of a better thing to do when hanging out in a super modern city like Seoul, South Korea then to go for a bike ride. It’s a great way to see another side of life here besides the typical tourist things  like visiting temples, museums and going shopping plus it’s so up close to everyday life here.

I actually got my idea for this ride from the latest Lonely Planet Korea guide with a few modifications to the route. Let’s call them accidental modifications.  I started out from Yeouido Park where you can rent bikes starting at 3000 won an hour, about $2.50 USD. Yeouido is considered the mecca for cycling in Seoul.

First stop was the Mapo Bridge where there is a designated cycle path making it safe and convenient to check out the views.

The Han River is the fourth longest river on the Korean Peninsula with a total length of almost 500km. This river was once a very large trade route with China through the Yellow Sea however due to estuary location at the borders of North and South Korea the river is no longer actively used for navigation.

An exit ramp from the other side of the bridge takes you to the north side of the river with great cycling paths. Keeping to the left on this path will continue your journey along the Han River. The destination for this cycle is the Seoul World Cup Stadium, built for the FIFA World Cup in 2002.

A great view of the beautiful domed National Assembly Building across the river. the legislative branch of the South Korean national government.

Keep riding along the path past this cliff and under the Yanghwa and Seongsan Bridges.

Excerpts from "Cycling The Megalopolis Of Seoul".

    Mikyia mo (Greetings);

Nebt Het, who was married to Set, left her husband, furious about what he had done to his brother. Later with her sister Ast and her son Enpu, the guide searched and found all the parts of Asr's body his phallus, which was believed to have been eaten by Hapi River catfish. (This explains why scavenger fish were not eaten in Kemet.) She then erected a new phallus from black clay enriched with the spirit of the Ntchr with the help of the Ntchr Khnum. This became the New Moon and the 14 days of resurrection into wholeness. Later monuments in honor of her husband's lost but regained regenerative power were carved from solid stone. (Those special monuments were called the Tekhn and they were placed always in front of the entrance of Kemet Temples). Ast also buried an image of each member of Asr when it was found and erected a tomb which became a place to worship to Asr their beloved Nswt. Not all was lost, however  Ast, using her magic or spiritual will, transformed herself into a Hawk. Fluttering above the body of Asr, Ast received his spiritual essence and became impregnated. This is still depicted on the wall today in the ancient city of Taen Tarert, later called Denderah by the Greeks, (Egypt) at the Temple of Sety Mry-n-Ptah and User-Ma'at-Ra Stp-n-Ra Much later in history Asians and Europeans will copy this divine birth story.

    Initiatic Eroticism & Tantric Temples

    in Spirituality

Don Traxler, translator of the work of Maria de Naglowska, deceased Russian occultist, mystic and founder of the Brotherhood of the Golden Arrow,  is with us tonight to discuss Maria's scope of work on the theme of Sex Magic or  Initiatic Eroticism and Other Occult Writings.  We'll talk about the Third Term of the Trinity, "hidden meanings" and the "importance of sex for the upliftment of humanity"  For more on Maria, she held conferences in Paris in the 1930sattended by many now famous avant-garde and notorious writers and artists of the day such as Julius Evola, Man Ray and Andre Breton.  She is the author of The Light of Sex, Advanced Sex Magic and The Sacred Rite of Magical Love.  Donald, a translator and student of the occult, living and calling from Uruguay, will enlighten us on her work.
In the second half of the show, Peter Levenda, author of the beautiful coffee table book, Tantric Temples: Eros and Magic in Java is with us discussing how Tantra is one of the most misunderstood of the esoteric disciplines.  In order to get clear on the real nature of Tantric ritual and belief, Peter takes us to where it's still practiced and from where important Tantric teachings originated a thousand years ago - the island of Jave in present-day Indonesia.  We'll discover how Tantra influenced secret socieites, mystics, alchemists, Kabbalists and magicians for thousands of years and how human secuality became a metaphor and template for both spiritual transformation and themanipulation of reality; of how various sexual acts and psycho-biological states became the basis for comprehensive cosmology that incorporates every aspect of human experience.

The Union of Isis & Thoth - With: Normandi Ellis & Nicki Scully

    in Spirituality

Deep within each of us lives a primal memory of a time when the natural world was recognized as divine and our temples were built from sacred materials enlivened through magic. Temples were not places you visited once a week; they were centers of community, divine work, healing, and wisdom, places where Heaven and Earth meet. This union of Heaven and Earth--the sacred temple--is also a union of Thoth and Isis: the Egyptian god of wisdom and the creative cosmic force and the Egyptian goddess of civilizing knowledge. Their relationship established the celestial teachings on Earth, for Thoth taught Isis all the mysteries and magic she knows and Isis acted as Thoth’s instrument to deliver the teachings in a form humanity could use.

Who Did That To You? Round Table Discussion with Dr James Jones

    in Education

The challenge facing all of us is to rise above the thing that have kept us divided in the past, by focusing us on the agenda of creating a better future for our people to see how all of us, with all of our varied differences, can come together and direct our energy, not at each other, but at the condition of the reality of the suffering of our people, that we might use all of our skills, gifts and talents to create a better world for ourselves, our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. It is time for us to stop thinking and acting solely on behalf of our churches, mosques, temples, synagogues and organizations. It is time for us as leaders to come together and begin to think, plan, and act on behalf of the whole of our people. We must put an end to the Mischief and the Mischief Maker!
